  1. Thinking about Thinking… Notes on the process of how we think…

  2. What is thinking? • Definition: • The activity by which a person reorganizes past experience through the use of symbols and concepts. • Symbol: Object/Activity that stands for something else. • IE. “A for a good test” • Concept: Meaning attached to qualities/characteristics that different things have in common. • IE. We understand what a chair is by knowing the qualities that make a chair up

  3. CREATIVE THINKING… • Creative Thinking sees humans come up with new and novel ways of reorganizing experiences…often to solve problems. • What develops creative thinking in humans? Examples or Strategies?

  4. What encourages creative thinking?? • 1. A rich stimulating environment: • Lots of stimulating experiences - Toys - legos, litebrite, crayons, play-doh - Travel - Cultural experiences • 2. Encourage and reinforce creative thinking - Learning through school projects - Art on the fridge • 3. Limit structure and rules. • Allow the child freedom to be creative -Lego explosions - Let children paint/color---ask what they are creating

  5. What encourages creative thinking?? • It is assumed that creative thinking ability is a predisposition. Certain humans inherit the tendency to be creative. Their environment nurtures that talent. Therefore, it is critical to nurture human creative abilities.

  6. Imagination… • Imagination is a form of creative thinking that may not necessarily linked to direct sense experience…thus less related to reality. • Eidetic Imagination: A form of imagination that is ultra-vivid. The created pattern approaches actual sense experience. • This is found in a minority of adults, but relatively common in children. It is assumed that increasing life experiences actually serve to dull/suppress imagination talent.

  7. Reasoning… • Reasoning is a form of problem solving thinking. There are two types: Inductive: A series of similar cases (experiences) are used to create an overall common concept about those cases. IE 25 seniors in a class want “Feelings” as their class song. You can inductively conclude that most seniors would desire “Feelings” as their class song. Error? Not enough cases to warrant the conclusion. Deductive: Applying an overall concept to a specific case. IE Holmes and the barking dog story. Error? A faulty conclusion to start with.

  8. We think all of the time… • We use our imagination, creativity skills, and problem solving skills all throughout our lives (however, many believe imagination wears over time and creativity is a disposition). If we did not have the ability to problem solve, our lives would be much more stressful and difficult… • Today we are going to go back to our childhood and practice our imagination and creativity skills! • Turn to page 6 in your packet to see your task!
