KS3 Curriculum • Science at Key Stage 3 places an emphasis on the process of scientific enquiry as well as accumulation of knowledge. Students receive three hours of science per week and are taught in mixed ability groups • The course followed by students is the scheme published by Oxford called SCIENCE WORKS.
Yr 7 Curriculum Map Being a Scientist (APP) Biology Chemistry Physics • Cells • Reproduction • Differences (APP) • Classification • Acids & Alkalis (APP) • Particles • Elements & Compounds • Chemical Reactions • Electricity & Magnetism (APP) • Energy (APP) • Forces • Space Within 5 of these units students complete APP (Assessing Pupils Performance) Tasks. Each task covers a key skill which students can transfer to other subjects. These skills include communication and collaboration, graphing, using research, investigative approaches, and working critically with evidence.
Assessing Pupils Performance (APP) • Assessment Focuses: • AF1 – Thinking Scientifically • AF2 – Understanding the Applications and Implications of Science • AF3 – Communicating and Collaborating in Science • AF4 – Using Investigative Approaches • AF5 – Working Critically in Science
Being a Scientist • 1. Safety in the science lab • 2. Drawing scientific diagrams • Making Observations • Using a Bunsen burner • Planning an Investigation • Carrying out a planned investigation • Completing an APP task
Extended Learning • ExL is set on a weekly basis throughout the year • Each half term there will be an assessed ExL task • This will be used in conjunction with the APP tasks to inform the levels awarded at each data track • These assessed Exl tasks will also use a level ladder approach similar to APP tasks
KS3 Key Revision Guides will be for sale at £6 at the end of the evening in reception, alternatively students may purchase these in school from the Science Faculty. Any Questions, please see us after the presentations l.butterfield@barnwell.herts.sch.uk s.tyler@barnwell.herts.sch.uk
