Major Issues Discussed • The importance of language in the internationalizing of counseling psychology • A. The challenge of using terminology, concepts, and translations of primarily western concepts to culturally appropriate formats and recognize that some concepts will not translate or will not be appropriate for some cultures and must be supplanted by indigenous concepts from indigenous research. • B. How should the progression of conceptionalizations in other cultures proceed: occurring • from the inside out (where the indigenous culture guides the process), from the outside in (where western influences guide the process), or both (can we use the example of the • progression in western culture, identify salient points in that progression, use these points
Major Issues Discussed • Are there “universal values and/or traits” that can help guide the internationalizing process and ultimately inform the develop of ethics codes (and other documents, eg. mission statements) • ower and empowerment-examples of power may come from cultural norms (personal space, etc.), varying influences of family and culture on decision-making, and how clients might feel empowered. • A person’s identification- self, other influences (family, culture)
Goals/Outcomes for Future • Identify challenges that international scholars/cross-cultural studies/indigenous studies face in publishing • Exploring and understanding ethical codes that are applicable to local community

Next Steps & Opportunities for Involvement • The group members will do a pilot study to investigate issues from international scholars/students to identify challenges and issues. The group will write a manuscript/report. • Build and update a bibliography on internationalizing counseling psychology • Set up a wiki site for continuing dialogue.
