What is DNA? Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms and some viruses.
What is DDNA? DDNA contains the generic instructions and metadata that could be used in the development andfunctioning of Products, Designs and ArtWorks. Nodes Spirits
Structure of DDNA DDNA is composed of spirits, spirits arecomposed of nodes, nodes are composed ofbits of information.
Coding the DDNA Pseudo-DDNA (PDDNA)(Natural Language Expression) Generative Pseudo-DDNA (GPDDNA)(natural language, with “Randomly Picked” or “Generated” values) Sampled-DDNA (SDDNA)(physically demonstrated, mix media information) Heuristic-DDNA(coded in XML Language, array of metadata) Generative-DDNA(heuristic, with “Randomly Picked” or “Generated” values)
Tools DDNA Extractor(Methods to derive DDNA from Objects) Design Blender(Methods to mix and blend different DDNA) Designers’ Avatar(Software that runs Generative Design DNA) Moodboards(Express set of nodes visually)
Simple Generated Work Designers’ Avatar “Dort”; created A series of “generated” abstract expressionistdrawings by Onur Mustak Cobanli, seeded by words.
DDNA Construction We need to define basic details such as shape, color etc. Here from the silhouettes of leaf, we define shape. From nature, we define possible colors.
DDNA Construction Further, we study the technology and material so that we identify the restrictions, and possibilities that we can use in creation of a product.
DDNA Construction Further, we study the technology and material so that we identify the restrictions, and possibilities that we can use in creation of a product.
DDNA Construction We also define the functional focus, here fore example is “Outdoor Furniture”. We have finished the DDNA Construction, but before we can have a generative design, we need to identify and define few more things: 1. What is the Algorithm to follow? ( A Pseudo Algorithm )2. Who/What runs the Algorithm? ( A designer ) 3. Desired typologies: Bench, Chair, Table, Chaise-Lounge etc.
Running the DDNA We run the algorithm over and over again, and pick the “working” designs, which will serve as our product family.
Tuning up the DDNA Sometimes it might be difficult to come up with a working product family, and in such case we need to play with the number of restrictions / free variables in our design.
DDNA Extraction We need to extract the DDNA from this design, and use it to design.
Process Algorithm for generating new designs from existing products or designs.
Product Family Generation Starting with an initial design, we have extracted the DDNA and created a product family by Pseudo-Generative Approaches.
