There’s more to research than Google • Try these search engines for research: • Inspire • CIA.gov • Zuula • Metacrawler • Sweetsearch • Finding Dulcinea • Nettrekker Click on Links Google only gives you one type of search results. Inspire gives you credible results and great primary source research results (journals, periodicals, reviews) that you can trust.

Search Engine Tips • Use a variety of search engines when researching—try zuula or metacrawler because they give you results based on a variety of search engines (including google) • Use the advance search options when using google. • Sweet Search, Finding Dulcinea, and Nettrekker are great resources for school research papers geared towards students.

7. Research Tips • Always use more than one source for your research. (I suggest 5 sources for our projects in here) • You will be able to determine if the information is current and valid by checking different sources. (Ask the 5 Ws on each site) • Know your resources available to you through school and the library. There are online databases (inspire and cia.gov that can give you research based resources that you can trust.)

Teacher Tips • If you want your students to only go to education websites posted by university, go to the search engine: • Seachedu • “Ten Steps to Better Research” Presentation for Parents & Educators • "Teaching the Ten Steps to Better Web Research" Slideshow Presentation • Know your library & school research tools available for you before sending your students on their own. There are online databases, research sites, and encyclopedias linked to most library school websites. • Tell your students to usually use wikipedia as a pre-research tool to start brainstorming or gathering information, but don’t rely on a community created website as a primary source of research. • Use the computer DyKnow Software to open specific websites or your choice, send them documents with hyperlinks, or even block specific websites (or search engines) to encourage good research practices
