Why Practice Phrases? • These adapted phrases contain some of the first 100 words from the Fry Instant Word List (1980), which represent 50 percent of all the words children encounter in elementary school reading. • Repeated reading of these phrases helps your child practice reading high-frequency words and developing fluency and general proficiency. • Reading these phrases should not take the place of reading real books! Please continue to read and have your child read every night!
What is fluent reading? As you read these phrases, remember, fluent reading is not reading as fast as you can! Fluent reading is: Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and quickly. Fluent readers read aloud effortlessly and with expression. Their reading sounds natural, as if they are speaking. Readers who have not yet developed fluency read slowly, word by word.
