The Global Fund fights AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria Nov. 17, 2013 By Heather Stein, guest columnist During the first two weeks of October, members of Congress orchestrated a government shutdown that resulted in an incredibly wasteful $24 billion hit to the U.S. economy. Think of this contrast: With a pledge of just $5 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the United States could set the stage to save 10 million lives over the next three years. Here’s how.
Fight killer diseases with funds By Frances C. Moore PUBLISHED MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2013 AT 1:00 AM / UPDATED AT 2:29 PM The writer, of Bellevue, is a partner in RESULTS, a grass-roots citizens lobby that specializes in poverty issues. Talk about a health care bargain. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria saves 100,000 lives each month and is strengthening health care systems around the globe. These three killer diseases could be brought under control in the next decade if we don’t take our eyes off the ball. Now is the time to secure the progress made and not lose the battle we are so close to winning.
U.S. should commit funds to fight deadly diseases November 29, 2013 12:00 am • by Cynthia Changyit Levin One year ago, I sat in a grassy Ugandan churchyard, drawing pictures for the children of Rosemary, a solemn woman bravely standing in line for HIV testing. A mother, like me, she carried all her hopes for her family’s future. Yet Rosemary lives in extreme poverty without health insurance or transportation to a faraway hospital. Ugandan officials, her church, and UNICEF worked together to bring life-saving health care to her remote village. She was nervous because of the medical danger and social stigma a positive HIV diagnosis would carry.
As athletes gear up for this summer’s Olympics, I’m looking to our leaders to make a gold medal commitment of their own: to the health of today’s kids and tomorrow’s champions. *** What do Eleanor Roosevelt, King Tut, and Andrew Jackson all have in common? They all died of TB, a now curable disease that still kills 1.5 million people a year worldwide. *** Just a few short years ago, Luwiza, a widow and mother of three, was laying on what was supposed to be her death bed. She could hear visitors’ whispers of that day being her last. With each passing moment it seemed more and more likely that Luwiza would lose her battle with the same disease that took her husband’s life—TB.

Hi Rebecca, With Mother’s Day around the corner, attached please find a submission looking at something that connects mothers all around the world – the health of their children. Indeed, the things that keep me awake at night – the health and wellbeing of my own son – are not so different from moms all around the world. Later this year, our leaders will have a chance to make a big commitment to childhood nutrition that can help all of us sleep better. Do you think this might fit in your plans for next week either online or in print? Have a great weekend! Barbara
Hi Ron – Thanks for the great piece you ran on Zika and what more we need to be doing. Below is a submission on a chance for our leaders to get out front of diseases, so we’re not just struggling to keep up. In September world leaders – including President Obama – will be making commitments to help tackle AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, three of the world’s biggest killers. Do you think you might have space on the opinion page in the next few weeks? Best, Ben
Hi Laurent – Just quickly following up on the submission below on the fight against AIDS. You’re absolutely my first choice outlet, but I’ll need to look to elsewhere by this Wednesday if you’re not interested. Thanks for your consideration. Cheers, Colin
Next Steps • Why is this important work? • What should be our group goal for opeds written, submitted, printed? • Who feels they can do this? • Let’s hedge our bets: • Follow your plan. • Exchange plans with partner and help each other follow your plan. • How do we want to communicate as a group?
