  6. Video – Rights from the Heart(NFB - The National Film Board of Canada) • Watch each video very closely! • 1. Record the title for each video. • 2. When each is finished, I want you to try to select which human right(s) are being infringed upon. (violated) • * I will supply you with the 30 Rights!! And what to do following each video.

  7. RightsScramble (Activity) Copy each right (in yellow) into your Social Studies and then match each behaviour to one of the rights. This means that I will be free to express my feelings and opinions without being interrupted or punished. This means that no one will yell, scream, shout, or make loud noises. • I have a right to be myself in this room. • I have a right to be safe in this room. • I have a right to hear and be heard in this room. • I have a right to learn about myself in this room. • I have a right to be happy and to be treated with compassion in this room. This means that no one will hit me, kick me, push me, pinch me, hurt me. This means that no one will laugh at me or hurt my feelings. This means that no one will treat me unfairly because I am black or white, fat or thin, tall or short, boy or girl.

  9. Human Rightsand Empowerment • Use the white paper provided to create a visual representation of human rights and empowerment. Create aPOSTER! • Your poster can be about any aspect of human rights and/or empowerment… or You may wish to focus on Article 12 and the poster contest theme below. (Either is fine!) • Tips: • Please take pride in your work… neatness, develop illustrations, color should be used to enhance your poster. • **Each year on November 20th, Canadians from coast to coast celebrate National Child Day in commemoration of the United Nations’ adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, on November 20, 1989. To mark this important day, the Office of the Ombudsman facilitates an annual  poster contest. This year their theme is “Our time to be heard”, based on Article 12 of the UN Convention. Students in grades primary to seven across the province are invited to take part in this poster challenge by designing a poster that illustrates their understanding of Article 12 and Children’s Rights.

  10. The 30 Universal Human Rights!! Do you know them?? • Make a listing of the 30 Rights. (Just the title for each is fine!) • Pick any 5 and copy out the explanation… or give your own.

  11. Assessment Tasks Pass in: 1. ‘Rights Scramble’ (on looseleaf) 2. ‘Rights from the Heart’(video title and associated work on the other side of #1) 3. Poster/Illustration to represent Human Rights and Empowerment (should be done on white 81/2 x 11 paper)
