Well, near the theatre there were Cockfights and bear baiting
Near the theatre Bawdyhouses, pubs and taverns
Irony, the church was opposed to the theater, but the church owned all of the land of Southwark and made money on this!
Advertising was illegal • Thus, the flags- told type of play & showed the play was coming that day History/ war tragedy comedy
Sights of the Theater • minimal props • extravagant costumes and makeup • no women actors • prostitutes and vendors • more expensive seats for higher seats
Young boys as females makeup
Smells of the Theater Sweat Beer Urine (not one bathroom for up to 3000 people- no intermission- reason for higher seats as expensive)
Tastes of the Theater • Oranges, hazelnuts, gingerbread, apples, beer and water
Sounds of the Theater • Trumpet fanfare one hour before the show • The globe was ingenious b/c of natural sound system
