  1. Matter, Mass & Volume IAN pg. 17 (4 Slides) Main Ideas1. Matter2. Mass3. Weight4. Relative Weight Objective Define MATTER, MASS, WEIGHT, & RELATIVE WEIGHT by using notes, collaboration and IAN output pages. Winners never quit and quitters never win. - Vince Lombardi

  2. Matter: Anything with mass and volume (takes up space). A. All objects and substances are made of matter. 1. Different objects have different amounts of matter. EX. Baseball vs. Tennis Ball B. Energy, like light, sound and heat is not Matter. (Energy doesn’t Matter !) 2

  3. II. Mass and Weight A. Massis the amount of matter an object has. (kg) B.Weight is the measure of the force of gravity. (N) Weight measures force, Force is measured in Newton's. Weight is commonly measured in pounds.

  4. C. An object’s Mass does not change! D. An object’s Weight can vary! Why? The force of gravity. In space you would be weightless. This is referred to as a “0-G” environment. 4

  5. III. Relative weight vs. weight A. Weight can be measured by the Formula F = m x a Measured in Newton's (N) Ex. 70 kg x 9.8 m/s/s = 686 Newton's B. Relative weightcompares your weight on the earth to other Planets. Ex. Earth Mars 150 lbs 57 lbs
