California State University CSU Campus Map • Filing Period: • October 1st – November 30th 2014 • “A-G” Requirements • SAT or ACT • Application cost per campus: $55.00 (fee waiver available, if granted can apply to 4 CSU campuses for free) Apply at: www.csumentor.edu CSU impacted campuses: SDSU, CSULB, CSUF, SJSU and CPSLO

University of California UC Campus Map • Filing Period: • November 1- 30 2014 • “A-G” Requirements • Minimum GPA= 3.0 • ACT Plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test • (depending on UC campus and the major- the SAT II may be required) • Apply at: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/apply-online/index.html • Personal Statement Required (1000 words) to complete application. Think of it as two “interview” questions • Application cost per campus: $70.00(fee waiver available, if granted can apply to 4 UC campuses for free)

What information do college applications ask for: • Student and Demographic Data • Know your social security number (SSN) • Know your Statewide Student ID(SSID), some college applications ask for it. • SAT, Subject Exams and ACT scores • Extracurricular Activities • Clubs, Sports, Community Service, Part Time job, etc • May require an Essay(s) • Signature – electronically • Payment (if required) • Fee waiver may be available • Academic Information (“A-G” courses) • A current unofficial transcript will help fill out applications (request in counseling office during before school/break/lunch/afterschool)

  8. “A-G” Courses ALL “A-G” COURSES MUST BE PASSED WITH A “C” OR BETTER BOTH SEMESTERS OF EVERY YEAR • On the academic part of the application, you will need your unofficial transcript and the list of “A-G” courses. • “A-G” Course List Website: www.ucop.edu/doorways • MUST include Senior Courses that are “A-G”. For courses your currently taking, in the application you will put “IP= in progress and/or PL= planned • UC’s = list all courses and grades (even the course that the student got a D in) • CSU’s = list courses and grades (list the better grade and year that the course was retaken)

SAT Reasoning/SAT Subject Test Date Registration Deadline: • Nov. 8thOct 9th • Dec 6thNov. 6th Cost: SAT= $52.50 Subject Exam= $26.00 basic fee plus the subject exam ($16/subject and $26 if it’s a Language w/Listening exam) Register at: www.sat.org/register CSU Mentor Code: 3594 ACT If considering a UC, take the ACT plus Writing Test Date Registration Deadline: *Oct. 25th Sept. 19th Dec. 13th Nov. 7th *= Test site @ Galt High Cost: ACT no writing= $38.00 ACT plus writing= $54.50 Register at: www.actstudent.org/start **Some of you may qualify for a fee waiver, please see Mrs. Farwell (Career Center). *** You’re responsible for reporting your SAT/ACT scores to the college.

  15. CSU/UC important information: Once admitted: • If you attend a CSU campus, you will be required to take the ELM and EPT Placement exams, which you can start taking in January 2015. You may be exempt from these placement exams based on how you do on the additional questions you answered on the CSTs for the Early Assessment Program (EAP) or SAT/ACT scores. http://www.ets.org/csu/about • If you attend a UC campus, you will be asked to take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam in May 2015. You may also be exempt from this exam SAT/ACT score in English/Writing or a 3 or better in the AP English Exam. http://www.ucop.edu/elwr/index.html • CSU/ UC Admission Status- check online. (December 2014 – March 2015) • Log in to the website to look up admission decisions and do any updates on contact info. Both Systems will give you a specific login to their school, the login must be activated within a week after you were emailed the information. • May 1st – Statement to Intent to Register (SIR) due. • Before you graduate, do an official transcript request to notify the Registrar when and to what college you want your official graduated transcript mailed to.

College Checklist • CSU Application period: October 1st to November 30th2014 • UC Application period: November 1st to 30th2014 • Private Colleges/Universities, varies by school • If you’re a AB 540 student, see your counselor for more information. • Before you graduate, fill out an Official Transcript Request Form so that our registrar mails an official graduated transcriptto the college you plan to attend in the fall. ** Constantly check your online portal for each college you applied to. Very often, this is what colleges use to communicate with you. If they request an official transcript, please fill out an Official Transcript Request form by our registrar’s office.

  17. California Community Colleges • Filing Period: • February – May 2015 • High School Diploma • Math and English Placement tests required to register for classes • Apply at: www.cccapply.org **Make sure to apply as soon as you are able to, so you can sign up for classes soon….

NCAA Clearinghouse • If you plan to play sports for a college once you graduate, you must register with the NCAA clearinghouse and make sure you meet the requirements for the Division you want to play for. • Division 1- 16 Course Requirement • 4 years of English • 3 years of Mathematics (Algebra 1 or higher) • 2 years of natural/physical science (1 year of lab) • 1 year of additional English, mathematics or natural/physical science • 2 years of Social Science • 4 years of additional courses (from any area above, foreign language) • There is a sliding scale for your GPA and SAT or ACT test score. • Division 2- 16 Course Requirement • 3 years of English • 2 years of Mathematics (Algebra 1 or higher) • 2 years of natural/physical science (1 year of lab) • 3 years of additional English, mathematics or natural/physical science • 2 years of Social Science • 4 years of additional courses (from any area above, foreign language) • Minimum GPA for Division 2 is a 2.00, min. SAT score is 820 or ACT sum score of 68. • NCAA Eligibility Center’s website: www.eligibilitycenter.org • When registering to take the ACT/SAT, use the NCAA Eligibility Center code: 9999 so NCAA can get your scores.

Vocational Military • Vocational schools include: Heald, Wyotech, ITT, UTI, DeVry, Le Cordon Blue, FIDM, etc. • Admissions Requirements: • Apply 6 weeks before planned attendance date • High School Diploma • Math and English Placement Tests • MilitaryRequirements • High School Diploma • ASVAB – recommended score of 50. ASVAB Exam offered at LRHS on October 22nd. • Some branches no longer accept any on line courses, please contact the recruiter • Currently all branches of the military are giving preference to High School Seniors. If you wait until after you graduate you will be placed on a waiting list.

World of WorkPrepare For the Job Hunt • Are You Job Ready? • Do you currently have: • Picture ID • Social Security Card • Prepare a Resume • Complete an application form • Three references from non-relatives • Knowledge about contacting Employers • Knowledge about interviewing techniques • Reliable transportation • Participate in a job interview 10 Most Serious Problems of Young Workers • Absent from work too frequently • Has to be supervised too much of the time. • Takes no initiative when something needs to be done. • Isn’t very observant. • Arrives late or leaves early too often. • Doesn’t listen well. • Doesn’t consider the consequences of decisions. • Too much socializing with other workers or visitors. • Can’t accept suggestions or criticism. • Doesn’t seem to care about doing a job well.

Important 12th grade Deadlines Cont’d…Financial Aid 1st semester: • Look up scholarships ( a good website, that students can go on now is www.fastweb.com ), ask for letters of recommendation (make sure to give the people you are asking a letter of rec. from plenty of time) • Create your FAFSA Pin at www.pin.ed.gov (it will be the students and parents electronic signature on the FAFSA) • Cal-Grant: in order to submit electronically, we will need the students social security number. www.calgrants.org • CSS/Financial Aid Profile: certain private schools require it and there is a fee for each campus. https://profileonline.collegeboard.com • Attend our Financial Aid Workshop (Also, in the 1st week of December we will be visiting your Econ/Govt classes to help you understand what Financial Aid is and how to fill out the FAFSA or CA Dream Act application.) 2nd semester: • Continue to look up scholarships, ask for letters of recommendation (make sure to give the people you are asking a letter of rec. from plenty of time) • Submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)- Jan. 1st- March 2ndwww.fafsa.ed.gov • Verify / Update the information on the Student Aid Report (SAR) • If the college you are attending asks for further documentation, make sure to provide them in a timely manner.
