On Christmas Eve, 1776, Washington made a gutsy move. Most of his soldiers would be ending their commitment in 3 days. He would have no army. The weather was horrible. It was snowing, freezing, and some men didn't have coats or shoes. Washington gathered his men, horses, canons, etc, and in several boats, crossed the Delaware, fighting ice as they went.; they marched 8 miles in a snowstorm to attack the Hessian (German) soldiers while they were resting from their holiday celebration. They were successful. That was the Battle of Trenton. It was an amazing victory that put Congress on notice that Washington was indeed invaluable to the cause.
