  10. The extent of the challenge… Prevalence of mental health problems: • 4 - 12 years: 7 - 14% • 13 - 17 years: 19% • 18 - 24 years: 27% Up to one in four young people are likely to be suffering from a mental health problem.

  11. The extent of the challenge… Psychological distress: • High to very high • Females: 19% (compared to 13% in 1997) • Males: 13% (compared to 7% in 1997) • Moderate • Females: 51% • Males: 40%

  12. The extent of the challenge… Depression: • Under 18 years: One in five are likely to experience a diagnosable depressive episode Anxiety disorders: • 18 – 24 years: One in 10 diagnosed • Females: 14% • Males: 8%

The extent of the challenge… Psychiatric disorders: • Under 24 years: 75% of people suffering from an adult-type psychiatric disorder have experienced its onset by 24 years of age Self Harm: • Under 24 years: 43% increase in hospitalisation rates for intentional self harm • Females: 51% increase • Males: 27% increase

  14. The extent of the challenge… Suicide attempts: • Under 24 years: prevalence of suicide attempts approximately one in 20 • Females: report higher attempt rates • Males: attempts are under-reported. Suicide: • Under 24 years: decreased by 57% since 1997 • Second leading cause of death

  15. The extent of the challenge… Burden of disease: • 0-14 years: 23% • 15-24 years: 55% • 12 – 24 years: over 47,000 hospital visits for mental disorders in 2004-2005. • Mental disorders accounted for almost 50% of the total disease burden among young people
