  1. Georg Friedrich Händel

  2. Early life • When he was a kid he wanted to study music. His father wouldn’t let him, he didn’t think anyone can make money of it. His mother supported however. His father didn’t allow an instrument for him to have. • When he was 7 he got the chance to play the organ at the Dukes Court in Weissenfels. • While there he met Friedrich Wilhelm Zachrow. With the help of Zachrow he mastered the organ, oboe, and violin by the time he was 10. • He was born in Halle, Germany

  3. Education • He was a German born British Baroque composer. • He received critical music training in Halle, Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712

  4. After Settling • Within 15 years of being in London he had started 3 commercial opera companies, to supply the English nobility with Italian opera. • In 1737 he had a physical breakdown and changed direction creatively and addressed the middle class.

  5. Work • As Alexandra's Feast grew popular, Handel made a switch to English choral works. • After his success with Messiah he never performed an Italian opera again. • He also performed an opera called hallelujah, which I have got for you to listen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usfiAsWR4qU

  6. Hospital Helping • Handel was only partly successful with his performance of English oratorio on mythical biblical theme. • When he arranged a performance of Messiah to benefit The Founding Hospital the criticism he got for his other works ended.

  7. Death • Almost blind and having lived in England for almost 50 years he died April 14, 1759. • A respected rich man, his funeral was given full state honors and he was buried in Westminster Abbey. • Handel is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time, with works such as Water music, Music for the royal fireworks, and Messiah. He composed over 40 operas in 30 years.
