LC RDA Implementation • March 31, 2013 was Day One for Library of Congress cataloging using RDA for general materials (and *all* authority records) • Some special format cataloging areas adopted RDA • Notated music • Cartographic material • Areas not adopted RDA yet for bibliographic: • Rare books • Archival cataloging • Motion pictures and sound recording • Prints and Photographs
PCC Day One for Authorities • March 31, 2013 was Day One for the Program for Cooperative Cataloging for creating RDA authority records
PCC Set Implementation Date for Bibliographic Description • January 1, 2015, Day One for the Program for Cooperative Cataloging for creating monographic and serial bibliographic description using RDA http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/documents/Final-date-AACR2-PCC-Bib.html • PCC BIBCO and CONSER programs have completed BIBCO and CONSER Bridge training in anticipation of the upcoming change • PCC SACO program remains unchanged
Integrated Library System (ILS) Upgrade • Library’s ILS completed upgrade to Voyager 8.2.0 in February • Public catalog interface re-designed to provide Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility (not yet the default OPAC)
ALA-LC Romanization Tables • LC continues working closely with CC:AAM for revision proposals and approving new tables • Revision proposal on Tibetan is at development stage • Also available on Cataloger’s Desktop: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html
Cataloger’s Desktop RDA-related Resources Added • RDA: Information and Resources in Preparation for RDA (LC) • RDA: LC Documentation for the RDA Test (LC) • RDA: Resource Description & Access (subscription resource that requires a separate subscription to RDA Toolkit) • RDA-L (Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA electronic discussion list) • RDA Training Resources (CILIP-BL) • RDA Vocabularies (Open Metadata Registry)
Improving Desktop’s User Interface • LC is working with the Desktop contractor to overhaul and simplify Desktop’s user interface • Current functionality will be retained • “Search first” approach
Subject Policy Publications Update in Light of RDA • New edition of the Classification and Shelflisting Manual (CSM) published to accommodate changes due to RDA • Subject Headings Manual (SHM) Update #2 • 35th edition of Library of Congress Subject Headings
Online Publication of Cataloging Documentation • In June 2013, LC announced a transition to online-only publication of its cataloging documentation • Migration to free downloadable PDF versions of these publications
RDA Toolkit Release and Notable Updates to LC-PCC PSs May 2013 release • Continued to add PCC practice to Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 and others • 2.3.1.4 option - New statement added to record LC/PCC decision on abridgment of the title proper • 9.19.1.4 option - Revised LC/PCC policy on optional use of “fuller form of name”
RDA Toolkit Release and Notable Updates to LC-PCC PSs July 2013 release • 6.2.2.4 - Deleted section on Language editions with different titles (incorporated into RDA) • 8.11 (Undifferentiated name indicator) - Added reference to PCC guidelines on undifferentiated personal names
RDA Toolkit Release and Notable Updates to LC-PCC PSs July 2013 release • 9.0 - Changed policy on the relationship between the LC/NACO file and LCSH for the creation of authority records for fictitious entities and named animals • 9.3.1.3 - Added information about recording complete dates in MARC field 046
RDA Toolkit Release and Notable Updates to LC-PCC PSs July 2013 release • 9.6.1.3 - Provided guidance on the selection of a distinctive term for another designation of a person • 9.19.1.6 - Added LC/PCC practice for optional addition of other term of rank, honour, or office to authorized access points for persons
RDA Toolkit Release and Notable Updates to LC-PCC PSs July 2013 release • 11.2.2.14 (Subordinate related bodies recorded subordinately) - consolidating and restructuring of instructions
RDA Toolkit Release and Notable Updates to LC-PCC PSs February 2014 release • 2.8.2 - Added new requirement for recording the first U.S. place of publication for titles cataloged as part of the Cataloging in Publication program (LC practice only) • 16.2.2.14 - Added reference to DCM Z1 (667 page) for additional information on city sections (667 notes, geographic subdivision practice)
Now What’s Ahead of Us? • BIBFRAME • PCC RDA Authorities Phase 3 • Implementation of RDA Relationship Designators Guidelines • RDA Toolkit April Release
Bibliographic Framework Initiative (BIBFRAME) • Based on Linked Data model • Started in Nov. 2012, focusing on a migration plan to make transition from MARC to a new framework - early experiment • Now the test implementation phase using vocabulary published on the BIBFRAME site
PCC RDA Authorities Phase 3 • Consider approximately 7.5 million records not yet labeled as acceptable for use under RDA, or marked for review before use under RDA • The program may also re-evaluate records modified during Phases 1 and 2 • May consider records coded for RDA, to ensure that their 1XX fields are fully supported by additional authority records • Time frame: final report due March 15, 2015
Implementing RDA Relationship Designators • For both bibliographic records and authority records • The Relationship Designator Guidelines for Authority Records is currently being commented by the PCC • The Guidelines can be found at: http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/rda/PCC%20RDA%20guidelines/Post-RDA-Implementation-Guidelines.html
