Why we need it? • On-orbit performance monitoring is a requirement for all operational satellite instruments. • Past systems have their limitations (not fully online and accessible, not fully automated, not near real time) • On-orbit performance monitoring is an integral part of the integrated instrument Cal/Val system. • The operation of instrument is a dynamic process, and all instrument parameters should be monitored during the instrument operation, including calibration coefficients, instrument noise, calibration counts, and component temperatures. • The trend of instrument parameters will provide most reliable information with respect to instrument performance both short- and long-term, which are invaluable for instrument diagnosis and trouble shooting. 2007 CalPOP meeting

Summary • Automated instrument trending system have been running for HIRS and AMSU-A for NOAA-18 and METOP-A. • The functionality of anomaly notification has been implemented recently. • This system has been proven extremely useful for instrument monitoring and anomaly investigation. • Will implement for all instruments. 2007 CalPOP meeting

Summary • IASI hyperspectral measurements can serve as a baseline to inter-calibrate narrow- or broad- band instrument. • Demonstration of inter-calibration between IASI and HIRS shows this ability. • For the upper troposphere channels, IASI-convolved HIRS agrees well with HIRS. For other channels, we need to select homogeneous scenes to reduce the uncertainties. • We will extend this methodology into other instruments, such as the AVHRR thermal channels and GOES Imagers. 2007 CalPOP meeting
