  1. Automated Instrument Trending and Anomaly Notification Likun Wang QSS Group, Inc. Changyong Cao NOAA/NESDIS/STAR

  2. Why we need it? • On-orbit performance monitoring is a requirement for all operational satellite instruments. • Past systems have their limitations (not fully online and accessible, not fully automated, not near real time) • On-orbit performance monitoring is an integral part of the integrated instrument Cal/Val system. • The operation of instrument is a dynamic process, and all instrument parameters should be monitored during the instrument operation, including calibration coefficients, instrument noise, calibration counts, and component temperatures. • The trend of instrument parameters will provide most reliable information with respect to instrument performance both short- and long-term, which are invaluable for instrument diagnosis and trouble shooting. 2007 CalPOP meeting

  3. Bottom line • Automated • People need not to run codes everyday by themselves • Web-based • Everyone can access the results • Near real time • Updated daily based • Anomaly Notification • When instrument meet anomaly, a warning message should be sent to relative people 2007 CalPOP meeting

  5. Data Transfer Data Processing Post results System flow chart 2007 CalPOP meeting

  6. Web interface • Currently implemented for: • NOAA-18 HIRS & AMSU • METOP-A HIRS & AMSU • Instrument parameters include: • Blackbody and space view counts • Calibration coefficients • NEdN or NEdT • Component temperatures • Data quality check • by all channels • By all orbits • Updated daily 2007 CalPOP meeting

  7. Warning message - HIRS daily-averaged NEdN 2007 CalPOP meeting

  8. METOP-A HIRS NEdN trend - Monitor instrument noise Slope LRPT on LRPT off NEdN Spec. Turning on of LPRT triggered the noise of HIRS, and the noise disappeared when LPRT was turned later. 2007 CalPOP meeting

  9. METOP-A HIRS Slope Trend - Monitor instrument degradation - Degradation or responsivity change observed in slope - No degradation in longwave channels - Degradation rate is about 0.45% in 30 days for METOP-A HIRS channel 13 2007 CalPOP meeting

  10. Instrument temperature monitoring HIRS Filter Wheel Temperature for METOP-A and NOAA18 NOAA-18 METOP-A Filter wheel temperature for NOAA-18 HIRS is 3.6K warmer than METOP-A while both are stable with 0.1K variation. 2007 CalPOP meeting

  11. METOP-A AMSU NEdT Trending METOP-A AMSUA-A NEdT Trending for Channel 7 AMSU-A is stable and meets the specification specification 2007 CalPOP meeting

  12. By all channels By all orbits Monitoring data quality near real time 2007 CalPOP meeting

  13. Summary • Automated instrument trending system have been running for HIRS and AMSU-A for NOAA-18 and METOP-A. • The functionality of anomaly notification has been implemented recently. • This system has been proven extremely useful for instrument monitoring and anomaly investigation. • Will implement for all instruments. 2007 CalPOP meeting

  14. IASI HIRS Inter-calibration on METOP-A Likun Wang QSS Group, Inc Changyong Cao and Yong Han NOAA/NESDIS/STAR

  15. Instrument characteristics IASI on Metop-A HIRS/4 on Metop-A 2007 CalPOP meeting

  16. IASI Level 1C Spectra with HIRS SRF 2007 CalPOP meeting

  17. Simulated-HIRS measurements convolved from hyperspectral radiances R is the hyperspectral radiance S is the HIRS spectral response function L is the simulated-HIRS radiance i is the channel number ν is the wavenumber 2007 CalPOP meeting

  18. IASI-convolved HIRS vs. HIRS Ch 5 HIRS Brightness distribution patterns agree each other well. But we need the pixel-by-pixel comparison results! IASI 2007 CalPOP meeting

  19. METOP-A Instrument Scan Patterns 12 km 10.6km IASI HIRS 11.3km We select IASI pixels that are overlapped with HIRS; In other words, the pixels at nadir whose distance are less that (12+10.6)/2=11.3 km are selected MHSHIRSIASIAMSU-A 2007 CalPOP meeting

  21. Summary • IASI hyperspectral measurements can serve as a baseline to inter-calibrate narrow- or broad- band instrument. • Demonstration of inter-calibration between IASI and HIRS shows this ability. • For the upper troposphere channels, IASI-convolved HIRS agrees well with HIRS. For other channels, we need to select homogeneous scenes to reduce the uncertainties. • We will extend this methodology into other instruments, such as the AVHRR thermal channels and GOES Imagers. 2007 CalPOP meeting
