  1. Rangeland and Forestland

  2. Rangelands Rangelands: Open space that is needed for the grazing of livestock.

  3. Livestock are domesticated animals that are sold for profit. Identify the use of these domesticated animals: Chicken: Sheep: Cattle: Bees:

  4. meat, eggs Chickens?

  5. Sheep? wool, meat, cheese

  6. Cows? • Meat, leather, dairy

  7. Bees? • Honey, wax

  8. WORMS? • SILK

  9. Goats??? • Meat, cashmere (wool), milk, cheese

  10. Pigs • Bacon, Ham, Pork Chops, Sausage, Proscuitto, Hot Dogs

  11. Buffalo • Meat, Hide

  12. Problems Facing Rangelands Today: With an increase in population, comes an increase in demand for land. Less land is available to raise these animals.

  13. 1. Overgrazing: allowing more animals to graze in an area than it can support Effects: It reduces the usefulness, productivity, and biodiversity of the land causes desertification and erosion. causes of the spread of non-native plants.

  14. Solutions for Overgrazing • Foraging: animals search (graze) for food • Advantages: • gives plants time reach maturity before animal eats it • gives plants time to breed prior to grazing

  15. 2. Living Conditions for Animals With an increased demand for land, animals that would normally be allotted space to graze are now crammed in to tight living quarters.

  16. Tight Living Conditions for Livestock • Advantage • increases the amount of animals per space so more animal products can be produced • Disadvantage • Can lead to very unhealthy living conditions for the animals • spread of disease can take place much quicker • debated to be unethical for the animals’ rights

  17. “Cage-Free” and “Free Range” ? Recently more consumers are buying “cage-free” and “free-range” animal products WHY? Health and ethical issues of livestock living in tight conditions have caused consumers to purchase “cage-free” and “free-range” animal products

  18. Hormones Hormones are added to animals, especially cows, in order to produce milk quicker and grow quicker Thus, less cows, and space, are needed to produce the same amount of milk and meat.

  19. What are the effects of these hormones? These hormones are not filtered out and then consumed by humans. This has led to girls reaching puberty at an earlier age due to milk consumption. This is where the term “Hormone-Free” Meat and milk comes from

  20. Where can you buy organic food, hormone free food, cage free food, etc.? Try the Organic Food aisles of your local supermarket or specialty shops

  21. Forest Lands Any land that is covered with at least 10% trees

  22. Deforestation the cutting down of trees

  23. Deforestation Cons: reduced habitat for wildlife Causes soil erosion Landslides flooding • Pros: provides us with products we use everyday Examples: paper Napkins Toilet paper Furniture Lumber plywood

  24. Types of Deforestation Clear Cutting: removing all of the trees from a particular area at once, very destructive Selective Cutting: only removing mature trees, more expensive, less destructive

  25. Clear Cutting

  26. Selective Cutting

  27. Reforestation process by which trees are planted to re-establish trees that have been cut down If deforestation is higher than reforestation, then tree population decreases.

  28. Reforestation Some governments require companies to reforest to reestablish population and prevent erosion.
