  2. Infectious Disease • Sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) are infections that can be spread from one person to another through sexual intercourse. • The causes of STD’s are bacteria, parasites, and viruses.

  3. Most Common STDs • Chlamydia • Gonorrhea • Herpes Simplex • HIV/AIDS • HPV • Syphilis • Trichomoniasis

  4. Chlamydia • This trachomatis bacterium is the most commonly reported sexually transmitted disease. • The bacteria may infect the urethra and rectum in both sexes and the cervix in women. • Chlamydia can even infect other parts of the body such as the throat, lungs, liver, and eyes. • If untreated, chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility.

  6. Is there a vaccine against any STDs?

YES!!! • June 2006- first vaccine (Gardasil) was licensed for use against four major subtypes of cervical genital HPV. • It protects women against HPV subtypes 6 and 11, which are the cause of 90% of genital warts. • It also covers subtypes 16 and 18, which combined cause 70% of cervical cancers in American women. • Vaccine is 95-100% effective!
