  1. Do Now: Copy into your Notes • The United States began to become a world power in the late 1800s. The U.S. went to war with Spain in 1898, and gained several colonies, including the Philippines and Puerto Rico.

  2. Review – Answers on ½ sheet and hand in for quiz grade • 1. Explain how Manifest Destiny was an example of imperialism. • 2. What are three reasons for U.S. imperialism? • 3. Explain how U.S. foreign policy changed from the 1790s to the 1890s.

  3. Spanish-American War (1898) • Imperialist War against the Spanish empire • Causes: • 1. Yellow Journalism newspapers printed sensationalist headlines to get the American public in favor of a war with Spain • The newspapers wanted the U.S. to take Cuba for its sugar and tobacco

  4. Causes of the War • 2. Explosion of the USS Maine in Havana, Cuba • People assumed that Spain blew up the ship, and this led President McKinley to declare war

  5. Spanish-American War (1898) • The U.S. defeated the weak Spanish empire in 4 months • More American soldiers died from malaria than in battle

  6. Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders • Teddy Roosevelt recruited a group of soldiers called the Rough Riders • Roosevelt used his fame to get elected Governor of New York in 1898, then Vice President in 1900. • He became President in 1901 when McKinley was assassinated

  7. Spanish-American War (1898) • Results: • 1. The U.S. becomes a world power • 2. U.S. gains several territories • - the Philippines (in Asia) • - Puerto Rico • - Guam (South Pacific) • 3. Cuba The U.S. promises to give Cuba independence, but it has a heavy influence • Platt Amendment allows the U.S. to intervene in Cuba when it thinks it is necessary
