  2. Three types • Basic government may be one of three types: • Economic • Who controls goods and services • Political • How leaders get selected • Authority • Who holds the power

  3. Economic forms of government

  4. Capitalism • Private people and corporations own capital (buildings etc.), land and resources to make and distribute goods and services.

  5. Socialism Communism Capital, land and resources to make and distribute goods are owned by the government • The community owns capital, land and resources to make and distribute goods and services

  6. Political forms of government

  7. Dictatorship • One person has absolute power • Power is not inherited • Power is typically taken

  8. Monarchy • The monarch (King/Queen) may have absolute or limited authority • Power is inherited

  9. Theocracy Parliamentary and republican Power is held by leaders who have been elected by those are governed (the people) • Power is held by the church or religious leadership

  11. Revoluntionary • Seen during attempts to overthrow one government in favor of another • Authority is often in the hands of “rebel” leaders

  13. Oligarchy/ Plutocracy • A small ruling class holds the power in an oligarchy • The wealthy hold the power in a plutocracy

  14. Democracy • All the power rests in the hands of the people.

  15. Anarchy • Complete lack of any government or ruling body

Write • Make an argument to the United Nations recommending your assigned form of government for new and emerging nations. • You must provide the following information: • Type of government (What is on your card?) • Describe this style of government (use your notes!!) • Who has the authority? (Who is the leader?) • How do leaders get chosen? • Examples • Advantages and disadvantages (think of at least 2 for each) • Write one question that you still have about this form of government OR write a quiz question for a future quiz on governments.
