ICT Disasters • World’s Biggest Data Losses • In 2003 AOL suffered a security breach that led to theft of 92m e-mail records • In 2005 CardSystems, a US data company, admitted information on 40m American Express, Visa and Mastercard customers was illegally accessed • In 2006 TJX, a retailer, discovered sales data including 45.7m credit and debit card account information may have been illegally accessed • In 2006 US Department of Veterans Affairs revealed that data stolen from an employee’s home includes the name, address, telephone number, date of birth of 28.6m veterans • In 2007 HM Revenue & Customs admits copied discs with the entire database of 25m families in receipt of child benefit has gone missing in the post • Names, addresses, date of birth and bank account details
