WE KNOW YOU ARE ALL AT DIFFERENT PLACES WITH THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS, SO WE HAVE COMPLETED THIS POWERPOINT TO HELP GUIDE YOU AND HAVE PROVIDED DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES FOR YOU TO DO BASED ON WHERE YOU ARE AT WITH THE PROCESS.

RESEARCHING COLLEGES • Remember, you need to apply to at least three colleges (this can include 4-year schools, community colleges, trade schools, beauty schools, etc.). • But you need to do your research and apply to places that fit your academic and personal needs. Many of you already know where you are applying, but if you don’t know where you are applying or need to look at more options, please see the next slide for helpful websites.

WRITING YOUR PERSONAL STATEMENT • How to Write a Personal Statement for your College Application • What is a personal statement? • A personal statement is an autobiographical essay that colleges use to understand their applicants better, beyond looking at their GPA and ACT scores. These are typically 1.5 pages long, are usually required in college applications, and allow colleges to see you as a person rather than just another applicant. • Understand the view of the reader: Colleges are reading thousands of applications. They are looking at GPAs and ACTs, but they need to select students that will stand out. Your personal statement makes you stand out. It shows your leadership, skills, talents and interests beyond the classroom. It may explain why your grades or ACT scores were not higher. For example, a personal statement may show that sophomore year it was harder for you to earn good grades because you were dealing with obstacles and personal issues. • What are schools looking for? • Well-written, grammatically correct essays • Explanation of weaknesses in your application • Obstacles you have overcome • Passions and accomplishments, especially related to leadership • Show that you understand yourself—it tells the schools you are a deep thinker • Answer the specific prompt, if there is one • What is the personal statement process? • Brainstorm • Write a draft: Include Introduction, body and conclusion with theme • Make every word count • Receive feedback • Revise your personal statement until you are completely satisfied with it

PERSONAL STATEMENT (CONTINUED) • A Good Personal Statement includes: • ·Themes: For example, if you want to be a veterinarian, write about your earliest experiences with animals. “I have • always been drawn to animal rights. When I was 5 years old…” • ·Quotables. If the reader was skimming your personal statement, there should be some sentences that jump out, • that make them want to read more carefully. • ·Offers an inside look in the student’s life • ·Understand where you have come from and where you are going • ·Acknowledge personal issues that you have overcome, even if they may be painful • ·Steps back and assesses what you have accomplished • ·Tells a story that helps make you distinguished • ·Is specific; for example, If you say you want to become a teacher, provide the reader with specific reasons as to why • ·Has an angle or a hook • ·Has a strong opening paragraph; this is generally the most important paragraph and is where you grab the reader’s attention • ·Is grammatically correct and well written • ·Doesn’t include clichés, such as, “From a young age, I have always been interested in…” • What to brainstorm about? • ·What are my strengths? • ·What are my weaknesses? • ·What is special about me? • ·What kind of person am I? • ·What do I care about? • ·What was it like growing up in my neighborhood? • ·What’s special, unique, and/or distinctive about my life story? • ·When did you become interested in the career you would like to pursue and what have you learned about it that has • further stimulated your interest? • ·What are your academic, career and personal goals? • ·What skills do you posses?

PERSONAL STATEMENT (CONTINUED) • General Advice • If a college asks you to address a specific topic in your personal statement, be sure to address that topic • You can re-use this essay for other applications! • ·You will notice that many prompts will be very similar and you will be tempted to recycle your essays • ·It is a good strategy, but make sure you tweak it to fit the institution that is asking for it • ·Many scholarship applications will ask for personal statements as well

  18. HOW TO REQUEST YOUR OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT • Most colleges and scholarships will want a copy of your official transcript. Your first three transcripts are free, and after that, each transcript will cost $3. To request a transcript: • 1. Go to curiehs.org • 2. Click on the “Counseling” tab. • 3. Click on “Senior Transcript Request.” • 4. Fill out the form and pick up your transcript in the College Center • 3-5 days after you make the request. • 5. COUNSELORS CAN... • Write letters of recommendation for college • Nominate you for scholarships • Help with personal statements, college apps, scholarships • Give advice on school, life, friends, money saving strategies, family problems, living situations, depression, and anything else you can think of! • Change your outlook on different situations.
