SIL, XXXII Congress Budapest, 4-9 August 2013 Hypotrichs arespirotrichousciliatesandthesister-group ofthemainlypelagicoligotrichs spirotrichousciliates hypotrichs (e.g., Stylonychia, Oxytricha, Urostyla) oligotrichs (e.g., Tintinnidium, Strobilidium) euplotids (Euplotes, Aspidisca) Aspidisca Oxytricha Strobilidium Berger H, Monograph oftheHypotricha (Ciliophora), Poster 24
SIL, XXXII Congress Budapest, 4-9 August 2013 Main morphologicalfeaturesofhypotrichousciliates • Body length 50–800 µm, mostspeciesaround 80–200 µm • Body usuallyflatteneddorsoventrally • Prominent oral apparatus (adoral zoneof membranelles and 2 undulatingmembranes) • Cirri (bundlesofcilia) on ventral side • Bristlesrows on dorsal side • 2 ormore macronuclear nodules • Contractilevacuole on leftcellmargin contractilevacuole Note: manynewspeciesarepermanentlydiscovered, forexample, Oxytricha acidotoleransin an acidmininglake in Lower Austria From Weisse, Moser, Scheffel, Stadler, Berendonk, Weithoff & Berger (2013) Berger H, Monograph oftheHypotricha (Ciliophora), Poster 24
SIL, XXXII Congress Budapest, 4-9 August 2013 Biologyandecologyof hypotrichs • Asexual reproductionis, as in mostotherciliates, bytransversedivision • Most limneticspeciesarebenthic, fewpelagic • Somespecies form a lorica, andsomehavesymbioticalgae • Hypotrichs feed on bacteria, flagellates, algae, ciliates, andsometimes on smallmetazoans (e.g., rotifers) • About 800 valid speciesof hypotrichs areknown at present, about 300 ofthemoccur in freshwater;theremainingspeciesinhabittheseaandterrestrialhabitats Stichotricha • Hypotrichs arepresent in almost all non-pelagicsamplesfromlakes, ponds, runningwaters; they also occur in highlysalinewaters (cladotrichids) andsewagetreatmentplants (rare) Berger H, Monograph oftheHypotricha (Ciliophora), Poster 24
SIL, XXXII Congress Budapest, 4-9 August 2013 The Monograph oftheHypotricha (Ciliophora) • Volumes 1–4 alreadyavailable; vols 5 and 6 appear in 2014; publishedby Springer in MonographiaeBiologicae • Interestingfeaturesforlimnologistsandecologists • Unified descriptionsofspecies • Easy tousekeysto all species • Verydetailedecologysection, including all publishedrecordsanddata on generation time, biomass, food, etc • Two-sidedsystematicindex (e.g., Holosticha pullasterandpullaster, Holosticha) Berger H, Monograph oftheHypotricha (Ciliophora), Poster 24
