  7. TIHPON - Goals • Main objective • Combine telecommunications and Internet technologies to enable voice communications over IP-based networks to work with existing PSTN/ISDN/GSM networks • Philosophy • to create a competitive environment which allows to produce specifications with a global acceptance David Gurle

  8. TIPHON - Scope • Initial focus on voice communications • 3 phases: • Phase 1 (until end of 1997): Voice communication from an IP-based terminal to PSTN/ISDN/GSM handset • Phase 2 (until June 1998) : Voice communication from PSTN/ISDN/GSM hand set to IP-based terminals • Phase 3 (until December 1998): Voice communications from PSTN/ISDN/GSM handsets to PSTN/ISDN/GSM handsets using an intermediary IP-based network David Gurle

  9. TIPHON - Technical Objectives • define set of requirements for service interoperability; • identify reference configurations, interfaces and functional models (gateway) • specify call control procedures, information flows and protocols; • standardize address translation between E.164 and IPv4/v6 addresses David Gurle

  10. TIPHON - Technical Objectives (…) • specify technical aspects of charging/billing • specify technical aspects of security • define end-to-end quality of service parameters, including transcoding and echo-cancellation • implement and build demonstrating environment for TIPHON based products, the TIPHON Net! David Gurle
