  2. Why are Family Advisory Councils important to the work you do? • Family Advisory Councils are the perfect forum for an exchange of ideas in a safe and objective setting • Partnering with your consumer in the current healthcare climate is vital to the survival of organizations.

  3. Partnership and Engagement with your Family Advisory Council • Family Advisory Councils can provide: • An effective mechanism for receiving and responding to consumer input • Efficient planning to ensure that services really meet consumer needs and priorities • Offers a forum for developing creative, cost-effective solutions to problems and challenges faced by the program or organization • Supplies a link between the program, its surrounding community and community groups

Start-up Concerns and Surprises • Concerns • Personal grievance session for families • One family may try and monopolize conversations • No tangible outcomes • Time commitment • Cost • Involvement of non-English speaking families • Surprises • Families willingness to participate and see beyond their own personal experiences • Focus on opportunities for improvement • Innovative ideas expressed based on their experiences • Active participation with process changes • Requests to have more staff involvement

  7. Pearls of Wisdom • Start up requires more time than money • Meet with your administrators and leaders to discuss impact on Organizational Goals • Don’t let families who live at a distance discourage you • Work with translation services to include non-English speaking families
