  6. WHY THE NEED FOR A “FIT FOR WORK” POLICY? • Focus on workplace safety • An employee’s AOD use becomes relevant when it affects their performance or behaviour at work • Make clear that AOD misuse cannot be tolerated in the workplace for both legal and safety reasons

  7. EFFECTS OF AOD AT WORK • Safety compromised due to the effects on spatial perception, estimation of speed, reaction time, eye/motor co-ordination judgment and concentration • Relations with customers and other employees suffer • Poor role models / work culture

  8. WHY DO PEOPLE USE AOD? • Boredom • To relieve physical & emotional pain • Shift work • Enjoyment • Peer pressure • Socializing • Stress relief

  9. ALCOHOL USE • 860 stubbies of full strength beer • 171 stubbies of light beer • 77 bottles of wine • 8.5 casks of wine • 311 ready to drink stubbies • 14 bottles of spirits (Average Australian family, 2 parents in their 40’s with 18 yo daughter and 16 yo son)

  10. BLOOD ALCOHOL CONTENT (BAC) PEOPLES’ BAC ARE OFTEN VERY DIFFERENT: BIG “V” SMALL PERSON FIT “V” UNFIT PERSON MALE “V” FEMALE FOOD “V” NO FOOD

  11. PROCESSING ALCOHOL The “average” male body processes alcohol at a rate of 0.02% BAC per hour A standard drink will register 0.02% BAC per hour Females process alcohol at approximately ½ the rate of males

  14. WHAT ARE DRUGS? They are natural and manufactured substances that alter our physical or psychological state

Tetrahydracannabinol (THC) is the most common illegal drug Cannabis sativa plant Maximum high 15-30 minutes, lasts up to 5 hrs Affects central nervous system THC residue can remain in the body for 35 or more days Loss of inhibition Relaxed / euphoria Altered time perception Reduced concentration Reduced co-ordination, balance, short term memory & thinking process Increased heart rate Reduced blood pressure CANNABIS SHORT TERM EFFECTS

  16. CANNABIS MID TO LONG TERM EFFECTS INCREASED RISK OF : • Bronchitis • Lung cancer • Respiratory diseases • (3 joints same tar level as 20 cigarettes) • Illogical decision making • Psychotic symptoms • Schizophrenia (7x)

  17. AMPHETAMINES/METHAMPHETAMINES Central nervous system stimulant Affect the brain, heart, lungs and other organs Tolerance increases with use

  23. CODEINE IN THE WORKPLACE • Drugs don’t have to be illegal to be dangerous!!! • Can cause drowsiness • May impact on your ability to work safely

  24. COCAINE Cocaine hydrochloride is derived from the leaves of the coca plant Is a fine white/cream powder Powerful central nervous system stimulant Heightens alertness, inhibits appetite and the need for sleep and creates feelings of intense pleasure

  26. CAUTION!!! The possible apparent effects of suspected alcohol and other drug use MAY BEsymptoms of illness, stress or fatigue!!!

  27. Workplace AOD Testing • The purpose of workplace AOD testing is not to enable the employer to act as the “Social Police” • Ensures that all employees are fit for work whilst at work • Your employer has chosen to introduce Alcohol and Drug testing using the Drager equipment and products

  28. Saliva Drug Testing • Is non-invasive • A sample is easily and readily obtained • Provides laboratory standard, accurate testing results within minutes • Identifies “recent” exposure to drugs (psycho-activity)

  29. What Drugs Can Be Detected? • Amphetamines • Methamphetamine • Cannabis/Delta-9-THC • Cocaine • Opiates • Alcohol via Breath Analysis

  30. Windows of Detection • The Drager Drug Detection Systems detect the following: • Opiates, Cocaine, Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, can be detected up to 12 - 24 hours (approximately) after use • Delta 9 THC (Cannabis) can be detected after recent use • Detection times can and do vary

  31. Pre-employment • This type of testing will be conducted prior to the commencement of employment • Testing will take place at an appointed local medical centre

  32. Random Testing • This type of testing is conducted randomly • There are a number of selection possibilities • An entire shift can be tested • A section can be tested • Employees will be selected randomly using an electronic selection process

  33. Causal • Causal testing relates to an occasion where there is suspicion as to a persons fitness for work due to possible misuseof drugs or alcohol • Integrity Sampling attend as soon as possible

  34. When Can Testing Occur • Anytime • Integrity Sampling provide 24 hour, 7 day a week (365 days) post incident, cause and random testing service to our clients

  35. How Are the Tests Conducted • The employee will be informed of the intention to administer a drug & alcohol test • The test will be conducted in private • The process will be explained to the employee • The consequences of a positive test/refusal will be outlined

Negative Test • The employee is informed of the test result • The employee may resume normal duties • The negative result is recorded • The sample is disposed of • “All Test Results Will Remain Strictly Confidential Between Integrity Sampling, The Laboratory, The Employee And The Authorised Company Officer”

Positive Test • The employee is informed of the test result • The employee may request a re-test which will be conducted immediately following the initial result • Should the second test return an unconfirmed positive result, a confirmation sample will be analysised by a NATA Accredited Laboratory • A Chain of Custody procedure is followed to ensure the integrity of the sample • The Authorised Company Officer is advised of the screening result. • “All Test Results Will Remain Strictly Confidential Between Integrity Sampling, The Laboratory, The Employee And The Authorised Company Officer”

Laboratory Confirmation • A NATA laboratory certificate is issued outlining the type of drug and the volume detected • The Authorised Company Officer is advised of the laboratory result • “All Test Results Will Remain Strictly Confidential Between Integrity Sampling, The Laboratory, The Employee And The Authorised Company Officer”
