APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID AT UTMB - GALVESTON • STEP 1: Fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) • STEP 2: Processing of Information from Department of Education to UTMB • STEP 3: Package Student • STEP 4: Award Letter • STEP 5: Disbursement of Funds
STEP 1: FILL OUT FAFSA • Fill out FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov • UTMB – Galveston School Code: 013976 • Must have prior year’s tax return • If filling out 05-06 application must use 04 tax returns (Fall 2005, Spring 2006, Summer 2006) • If filling out 06-07 application must use 05 tax returns (Fall 2006, Spring 2007, Summer 2007) • PRIORITY DEADLINE: March 31 of every year
PARENTAL INFORMATION Institutional “need-based” Grants & Scholarships • Must provide, on the FAFSA, parents’ information • If parental information is provided notification is sent from UTMB to the student indicating the next step(s) require. • For consideration, every student is looked at as a DEPENDENT STUDENT regardless of dependency status ***ONLY WAY TO DETERMINE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STUDENTS WHOSE FAMILIES CAN CONTRIBUTE IF THEY WANT TO AND THOSE WHOSE CANNOT EVEN IF THEY WANT TO***
PARENTAL INFORMATION Cont. REMEMBER • Parent information for independent students is ONLY required to be considered for the institutional (UTMB) need-based grants and scholarships. • Students will still be awarded according to Federal Regulations and their independent status.
LAST MINUTE PROCESSING • Renewal FAFSA and FAFSA (paper or web-based applications) must be submitted by midnight Central Daylight time, June 30 of every year.
STEP 2: PROCESSING OF INFORMATION • Information is sent to UTMB from the Department of Education • UTMB sends email to student asking them to fill out the UTMB Application for Financial Aid
UTMB APPLICATION FOR FINANCIAL AID Helps us build students’ COA (Cost Of Attendance) • Students’ COA includes: • Tuition & Fees • Books • Living Expenses • Three budgets to choose from: low, medium, high • “Other Expenses” as determined by the school
STEP 3: PACKAGING • Student is packaged based on COA • Loans (Federal, State and Private) • Grants (Federal, State and Institutional) • Scholarships (Institutional, Need Based, Academic, Competitive, Outside-www.fastweb.com) • Federal Work Study (FWS) • Tuition Exemption (Hinson Hazlewood, 3rd Party Pay, etc.)
STEP 4: AWARD LETTER FINALLY, WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR
STEP 4: AWARD LETTER cont. • UTMB sends email to student indicating there is an award letter to review • Student has opportunity to: • Accept • Decline • Manipulate
STEP 5: $$$ DISBURSEMENT OF FUNDS $$$ • Funds are sent to UTMB • UTMB disburses funds to students • Direct Deposit (ACH) – forms available at Bursar’s Office, 2nd Floor of the Administration Building • Should sign up for this 2 to 3 weeks prior to first class day or 2 to 3 weeks prior to first disbursement • Via “Snail Mail” USPS • Not recommended
