Indium • Atomic Number is 49 • Atomic Mass is 115 • Its in Family 13 • Has 3 valence electrons • It’s a metal. • Solid at room temperature • soft, silvery-white metal
History of Indium • Was discovered by Ferdinand Reich and Hieronymus Theodor Richter in 1863 in Germany. • Named after the indigo line in its atomic spectrum • Its was found and identified as a minor component in zincores. • In 1924, approximately a gram constituted the world’s supply of this element in isolated form.
Uses for Indium • Used in making bearing alloys, germainium transistors, rectifiers, thermisters, and photoconductors. • It can be plated onto metal and evaporated onto glass, which forms a mirror just as good as those made of silver, but resists to atmospheric corrosion. • Used to coat the bearings of high speed motors since it allows for even distribution of lubricating oil. • Used to make low-melting alloys, alloyed in gallium.
Impact on human life • Should be regarded as highly toxic. • It’s said that in small doses its is to stimulate the metabolism • Can damage the heart, kidney, and liver, and can be teratogenic.
