The Origin of Christmas • What Does “Christmas” Mean? From the Old English “Cristes Masse”, Christmas means the “mass of Christ.” “Christ” means “Messiah” --- the title given to Jesus. “Mass” was a religious festival. • The birth of Jesus Christmas or Christmas Day is a holiday to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the central figure of Christianity. In the Bible, it is told that an angle had told Virgin Mary that she would bear a special baby. Not long after the angle’s visit, Mary and her husband, Joseph made a long journey from their home in Nazareth to Bethlehem to register their names with the ruling Roman government. Arrival in Bethlehem brought them worry and upset because there was no room for them to stay at the hotel. There was only space in the stable --- the animal house for travelers, donkeys and horses.
Jesus was born that night, and as they had no bed for him, they put the baby in the manger of hey, which was an animal feeding box filled with the dry grass the animals ate. That night, there were shepherds saying in the fields nearby, gathering their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel from God appeared before them in a bright light. They were afraid but the angel reassured them. He said he has brought them good news that the Son of God has been born today in the city of Bethlehem. The shepherds hurried to go to see baby Jesus. After worshipping Jesus, the shepherds told everyone what had happened. After Jesus was born, wise men came to look for him. Following the direction of the star, the three kings eventually found the place where Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus were staying. To bring honor to the child, they brought rich gifts, including gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Christmas Celebrations Christmas or Christmas Day is celebrated generally on December 25, although the exact date is not known to be the actual birthday of Jesus. In Christianity, Christmas marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days from December 24, Christmas Eve, to January 5, the eve of Epiphany. Although nominally a Christian holiday, Christmas is also widely celebrated by many non-Christians, and many of its popular celebratory customs have nonreligious themes and origins.

Silent Night Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright. Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child. Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia, Christ the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born. Silent night, holy night! Son of God love's pure light. Radiant beams from Thy holy face With dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus Lord, at Thy birth. Jesus Lord, at Thy birth.
Joy To The World No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessing flowfar as the curse is found, far as the curse is found, far as, far as the curse is found. He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations provethe glories of His righteousness, and wonders of His love, and wonders of His love, and wonders, wonders of His love. Joy to the world! the Lord is come;Let earth receive her King;Let every heart prepare Him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing. Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns;Let men their songs employ;while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plainsRepeat the sounding joy,Repeat the sounding joy,Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
