What are herbs • An herb is a plant or part of a plant that are used for different things. Herbs are becoming more popular for there benefits for the body. • Herbs are sold in tablets, capsules, powders, teas, extracts, and fresh or dried plants. • If a person is taking prescription medicine they need to consult with their doctors before taking certain herbs. Some herbs can block the effects of the prescription medicine that was prescribed by the doctor.
History of Herbal Remedies • Herbal remedies has been used in ancient history. • Indigenous cultures (such as African and Native Americans) used herbs in their healing rituals, while others developed traditional medical systems (such as Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese medicine) in which herbal therapies were used (University of Maryland Center, 2014). • Chemists began to use the ingredients in the herbal plants in order to produce their pharmaceutical drugs. Once pharmaceutical drugs was produced herbal remedies started to decline • People are dissatisfied with the price and effects of pharmaceutical drugs and are slowly starting to go back to herbal remedies.
St. Johns Warts • It is used for mild to moderate depression • It helps to improve mood and decrease anxiety and insomnia • Please consult physician before use if you are taking prescription drugs.
Garlic • It is used to help lower blood pressure, high cholesterol, decrease the risk of coronary heart disease, heart attack, and atherosclerosis • It possibly reduces the risks of colon cancer, rectal cancer, and stomach cancer.
Black Tea • It is made from camellasinesis plant • It is used for mental alertness, learning, memory, and information processing • It treats headaches and helps to lower blood pressure, prevents heart disease, and may reduce the risk of Parkinson disease. • Please do not consume more than 5 cups a day. • Contains caffeine and more than 5 cups can start to affect the body.
Melatonin • It is naturally found in the body. • It helps people who has sleep disorders such as insomnia, delayed sleep phase syndrome, sleep problems in children with autism. • It also helps people who are jet lag, and people who works swing shifts. • It adjusts your internal clock so that you will be able to get sleep when needed.
