ME Machine Shop Improvements Brian Church, Lucas Sychtysz, Katie Baldwin
Agenda • Perspective • Benchmarking Results & Analysis • Survey Results • Next Steps
Perspective • Originally, project was very broad • Focusing in on the student perspective • What are their needs? • How does the shop meet these needs? • Where/how does it fall short?
Benchmarking: Overview • Collected data from 22 different Machine Shops • Gathered information regarding: • Number of staff • Number of students the shop serves • Open hours • Equipment • Secure access and entry requirements • Prerequisites • Non-machine shop services • Who has access • Service fees
Benchmarking: Staff Average number of staff ~ 3 Full time staff counts as 1, part time staff counts as 0.5, student/TA counts as 0.25
Benchmarking: Student Staff Ratio Average student/staff ratio ~ 830 RIT has a better (lower) student/staff ratio than 70% (12 out of 17) of the Machine Shops that were benchmarked.
Benchmarking: Open Hours Average open hours ~ 58 hrs/wk RIT has more open hours per week than 77% (14 out of 18) of the Machine Shops that were benchmarked.
Benchmarking: Equipment • RIT provides the four most common capabilities • Assumed that each Machine Shop has basic equipment (manual lathes, mills, drill press, band saws, grinders)
Benchmarking: Prerequisites • VA Tech Klages Machine Shop is the most strict • B+ or higher in class, 85 or higher on quiz, test using lathes and mills • All Machine Shops require some sort of safety training
Benchmarking: Secure Access • Levels of access control: • High control - requires swipe access or students to relinquish ID • Medium control - various levels of student training/certification • Low control - training/ certification *RIT falls under the low control category
Survey Results • Created two surveys • Clubs & Organizations (8 responses) • General ME student population (9 Responses) • Compared and summarized responses
Survey Highlights: Clubs & Organizations • What additional capabilities do you desire in the shop? • 4/8 desire more knowledge and access to CNC machines. • Have the Machine Shop’s capabilities constrained or defined your needs? • In addition to the lack of CNC capabilities, some of the desired capabilities are only fulfilled by the Brinkman lab which can become quite costly for the teams. • In what other ways could the Machine Shop enhance your education? • 7/8 said they would be interested in taking more advanced training/machining classes. • How does the shop prepare you for co-op, courses, and/or project work? • Learning the abilities and limitations of machining methods helps students become better designers and more well-rounded engineers.
Survey Highlights: General ME Students • Do you use the sign-in system? • 2/9 said yes, the rest do not and some don’t know that it exists. • Are you interested in taking additional machining classes? • 9/9 said yes. • Have the Machine Shop’s capabilities constrained or defined your needs? • 2/9 desire more CNC capabilities (student worker responses). • How does the shop prepare you for co-op, courses, and/or project work? • People who use the shop beyond Materials Processing feel prepared, while the others don’t. • How do you feel about the level of safety in the shop? • Everyone appears to feel safe, but student workers have a concern about the safety of other students at times.
Next Steps • Revisit shop and record more data: • Number of people in the shop • Machines being used • Any safety violations • Did they need assistance • Update survey to acquire more data: • How self-sufficient do the students feel • What is their comfort level in the shop
