JAWSS TEAM 6: JAWSSA Design Project Presentation Team 6 members: • Louise McGowan • Ken Millard • Daniel Rice • Kevin Pearce “JAWSS HAS BITE” Joint-service Active Watch Surveillance Submersible
OVERVIEW • What is JAWSS? • Features of the Design • Testing, Trials & Tribulations • Future Improvements • Budget • Closing Remarks • Questions
Current Sub JAWSS 2: • Highly Visible Hull • Sturdy Aluminum Frame • Remote Operation • Colour Video • Four Thrusters • Water Resistant
Tow Tank Tests • Water Integrity • Buoyancy • Drag • More Water Integrity • Camera • Maneuverability • Inspection
Tow Tank Results - Good • Found True Drag • Verified Required Ballast • Controls and Camera Work • Passed Inspection • Leak Light Works!
Tow Tank Results - Bad • Gaskets • Thrusters • End Cap Seal • Tether Connectors • Dome!
Tow Tank Solutions • Modified Horizontal Thrusters • Sealed End Cap and Thrusters • Achieved Desired Buoyancy • New Tether Connectors • Replaced Dome – New Seal
HMCS ATHABASKAN Results - Good • Proved Test Depth of 10 ft • Conducted Hull Inspection • All Warning Lights Work • Confirmed Visibility in Harbour Water
HMCS ATHABASKAN Results - Bad • 19ft failure (2 x design) • Water on the inside • Team 6 mourns their loss
HMCS ATHABASKAN Solutions JAWSS 2: • Externally Mounted Thrusters • Epoxyed Previous Mounting Holes • Cleaned Electronics
DalPlex Results - Good • It’s Alive!!! • Proved Concept • Ease of Use • Maneuverability Tests • Speed Tests
DalPlex Results - Bad • Still Small Leak – Bad Data Plug • Thrusters Not Enclosed • Tether Impedes Motion
Lessons Learned • DOME: Machining acrylic creates micro-fractures purchase a dome that requires no machining/modification. • PACKAGING: Some packaging does not clearly indicated all properties of a marine sealant find larger contained and read all warnings. http://www.sikaindustry.com/
Lessons Learned • SHIPPING: Just because you pay for overnight delivery does not mean you’ll get overnight delivery Use pack mules. • SEALS: Using machine bolts in PVC does not allow enough force to compress gasket Use alternative seals http://www.exzooberance.com/
Next generation electronics External thrusters Improved seals Hull clamped to frame Neutrally buoyant tether Bigger motors If We Had to Do It Again…
The Last Word • Many setbacks • Learned a lot • Low cost submersible achieved • Use O-rings to seal data plug leakage • It’s never too late to try again: • JAWSS 1 = 6 months • JAWSS 2 = 36 hrs
