  1. Studio Lighting Module 3

  2. Four Characteristics of Light Intensity Diffusion Direction Type

  3. Light Intensity How bright or dull the light source is. (Bright sun vs. Soft moonlight)

  4. Light Diffusion Hard/Direct Light Soft/Diffused Light How diffused (separated) the light particles are when they reach the subject.

  5. What diffuses Light?

  6. ** Light Direction ** Where is the light coming from?

  7. Front Cross Cross 45 Flash Ahhh! Flattens subject &minimizes value and texture Increases visibility of textures and dimension

  8. 45 degree Cross Lighting

  9. Backlighting Light source is behind the subject, silhouetting the subject. You lose all detail within the outer shape of your subject, but can still create a beautiful image.

  10. Light Type Natural Light Existing Light Artificial Light The source of light can significantly change the mood and look of your photograph

  11. Natural Light Light created by natural means—sun, moon, fire. This light is unpredictable and unchangeable.

  12. Existing Light Light that already exists in buildings and on streets. You can’t always manipulate these lights, so you have to work with what you’ve got. Usually low light and tricky to work with…

  13. Artificial Light Light that you would have in a studio setting. You can manipulate all the characteristics: intensity, diffusion and direction. Generally used with portraits and still-life.

  14. Unusual Light Sources… Use a TRIPOD with low light to avoid camera shake!!

  15. Module 3 Assignments Take portrait or self-portrait using studio lighting(light bulbs, clamps, lamps, etc.) Take a portrait or self-portrait shot using natural lighting. Take a photo that utilizes an “unusual light source.” Experiment with your camera’s build in Modes to create an image you like. The light source may also be your subject. 4. Take a candid shot with natural or existing light.

  16. Portrait versus Candid

  17. Candid?
