Normal Respiratory rates • Newborns 30-80 • Toddlers 20-40 • 5-14 Year Olds 15-25 • Adults 12-20 • ** Report Respirations in Adults below 8 and above 28 Immediately to the Nurse
Dyspnea: difficult or labored respirations • Apnea: absence of respirations, usually temporary. • Tachypnea: respiratory rate greater than 20 breaths per minute. • Bradypnea: slow respiratory rate, usually below 10 respirations per minute. • Orthopnea: severe dyspnea in which breathing is very difficulty in any position other than sitting erect or standing. • Cheyne-Stokes: An abnormal type of breathing seen especially in comatose patients, characterized by alternating periods of shallow and deep breathing.
