Part 2 Communication in Psychology: APA Style Research Reports
APA Style Research Reports • The American Psychological Association (APA) has guidelines for writing research reports. • When Denison Psych minors and majors enroll in a 200-level lecture-lab sequence, they learn to write APA style reports. • Here’s a preview….
APA Style Research Reports • Title Page • Title • Authors • Author Affiliation • A brief (one phrase) heading called the running head. This will appear on each page of the manuscript.
APA Style Research Reports • Abstract - One Paragraph!!! • The problem being investigated • Brief summary of method and participants • Brief summary of data (no numbers, just words). This often includes a statement about statistical significance. • Implications of findings
APA Style Research Reports • Introduction • Description of the problem / phenomenon under investigation. Operational definitions can go here. State why the study is important, or at least what new information it can provide. • Theoretical relevance of the study, and summary of relevant literature (e.g., from PubMed). Science is not done in a vacuum. • Purpose, predictions, and hypotheses to be tested.
APA Style Research Reports • Method • Participants (including informed consent & money or other compensation) • Apparatus or Materials (or Stimuli) • Procedure - Describe what the participants and experimenters did. The level of detail should be sufficient for replication.
APA Style Research Reports • Results • State the purpose of the analysis • Descriptive stats • Inferential Stats • Note: In this section, refrain from interpreting and/or arguing about what the data mean. Here, the data are presented in a matter-of-fact manner.
APA Style Research Reports • Discussion • Very briefly restate the purpose of the study • Summarize the findings, given your hypotheses • Alternative interpretations of your findings, and limitations of your work. • Relevance of your findings to the literature • Future directions
APA Style Research Reports • References • Acknowledgments • Appendices
