WHITHER PLUTO? Clyde Tombaugh – discovery 1930
NASA's New Horizons spacecraft carries a small aluminum canister containing some of Tombaugh's cremated remains. Launched Jan 19, 2006 towards Pluto. P.I. Alan Stern. Will arrive at Pluto in 2015.
THE OLD STORY: Has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape. Pluto, and many others yet to be discovered are true planets.
THE NEW DEAL: A full fledged planet must control its local orbit and sweep it clean of smaller objects. A ‘Dwarf Planet” (new category) is ‘round’, but is part of a swarm or does not dominate its orbit. Pluto is now a Dwarf Planet and the prototype of a subclass of Dwarf Planets yet to be given a name.
Characterize the time for an object to clear its neighborhood. Stern & Levison, 2002 Λ = T/ = kM2/P • T = Hubble Time • = ‘clearing time’ M = Object Mass P = Orbital Period Steven Soter, ApJ

ExploraDome programs – middle school Interactive Explorations (using Uniview – 3D interactive atlas of universe) – sample topics Earth Science – using near real time NASA satellite data, explore ongoing changes in weather, climate, land and ocean surfaces, atmospheric chemistry Moon phases, Seasons on Earth, and Eclipses Life in the Universe (special nature of Earth, possibilities of life on moons, extrasolar planets, etc) Journey from Earth to the Edge of the Universe – student-guided tour The Night Sky – planets, constellations, Moon Programs based on Minnesota Academic standards and tailored to group’s level and interests, based on pre-visit consultations with teacher.
ExploraDome programs – middle school Full Dome Video Shows Passport to the Universe, produced by the American Museum of Natural History and narrated by Tom Hanks. An incredible journey from our home planet and the Milky Way galaxy to the edge of the Universe. Audiences (20 min) The Search for Life: Are We Alone?, produced by AMNH and narrated by Harrison Ford. (20min) Listening to the Northern Lights. Experience the sights and sounds (chirps, pops, etc) of the Aurora Borealis that play out when the Earth's Magnetic Field interacts with the Sun. (10 minutes) Exploring the Arctic (several programs based on research voyages exploring changes due to global climate change). Field Trip to the Moon, developed by the AMNH and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, being piloted by Minnesota Planetarium Society. Guided by a presenter, students will launch on a NASA rocket, orbit the Earth, and experience a journey through the hazards of space to orbit and land on the Moon.
