  2. Why Did I Choose To Read Left To Tell ? • I went to Borders and the sales clerk was helping me when… • This woman’s face jumped out at me. After reading the back and inside page, I know I had to read this woman's miraculous(but dubious) story. • I read this book in two days! • Immaculee Ilibagiza was a 24 year old college student at home for Easter break when the genocide in Rwanda started between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes. • She hid in a bathroom three by four feet wide with seven other women for 91 days while Hutus searched for her. • Her mother, father, and two of her brothers were killed. Also , almost every friend, neighbor, aunt, uncle or cousin she had was killed. • During the three month massacre, over 800,000 Tutsis were killed by the Hutus.

  3. 2184 Hours • Seven woman ages 7 - 55 • 4 feet by 3 feet wide • Shower stall and toilet • Hutu minister’s house (Hutu or Tutsi, how can you tell?) • From 115lbs. To 65lbs. • Taught herself English

  4. How is She Different from Me? • Ethnicity/Culture -Tutsi Tribe • Race - Black • Religion - Catholic • Socio-Economic Status – Poor compared to us/ but richest in the village • Nationality - African/ Rwandan • Ability - Survival/ Faith • Tragedy - Family massacred

  5. How is She Like Me? • Education was important • Female • Mother with two children • Faith • Family- her parents wanted a better life for her • Author

What Is The Most Important Thing I Want You To Know About Immaculee? • She never gave up • She never lost her faith • Never stopped believing she would survive “Touch them with your Divine love, god. Only then will they drop their machetes and fall to their knees. Please, God, move them to stop their slaughter. Forgive them”(Ilibagiza. 2006. p. 105). • She forgave the unforgiveable!

  7. What did I Learn about Socio-Cultural Perspectives? • People all around the world(or in my classroom) are basically the same • Aspirations • Emotions • Security • Family

  8. What Did I Learn About Myself? • REAL tragedies happen all around the world every day • Be grateful for your life-someone’s is always worst • Faith is important- can get you through anything • Forgiveness- bitterness only hurts me • Open myself up- I can learn from people different from me

What Else Do I Want You To Know About Immaculee Ilibagiza? • Never stopped thinking about the future • Sickness • Confinement • Terror • Sleep deprivation • Hunger • Sorrow • Loneliness • Result: • Worked for the U.N. in Rwanda and then N.Y. • Married with two children • Reunited with her brother • Awarded the Gandhi Peace Award in 2007 • Motivational speaker
