  4. University Bike Helmets and Lights Campaign • Started in 2001 • Goal to get students (and faculty/ staff) wearing helmets and using lights • Sold 1000 low-cost light sets since ‘01 • Sold 1000 helmets • Health-Center Sales with Student Volunteer Fitters

  5. Program Details • Initial talks with campus bike shop • Transportation office -- interest in promoting bike transportation and $ in budget • Transp office made connection with health center

  6. Program Development • Brochure design • Initial purchase of helmets • Peer educators • Helmet ordering

  7. Program Development -Yr 2 • Added lights program • Partnered with bike shops • Included more models

  8. Background of Transportation Program • U-PASS is a comprehensive transportation program since 1991 • Bicycle commuting from 1989 went from 8% to 5% in 2002 • Create more added value for U-PASS bike riders
