HKIEStructural ExaminationWritten Examination Section 2 : Design QuestionBridge Ir Prof C K Lau
Objective - Test the capability of the candidates in the field of bridge engineering design. • Gauging - Will the candidate be employed as a structural engineer. ( suitable as a structural engineer ?) • For passing – Must satisfy the examiner in both Section A - total 40 marks ( at least 16 marks) Section B - total 60 marks ( at least 24 marks) so for passing must get ( at least 40 marks)
Important points to note • Section A - TWO proposals ( schemes ) are required and marks will be given to ^ Feasibility ^ why the scheme was chosen ? ^ structural framing and layout ^ aesthetic ^ practicability ^ constructability ^ stability ^ safety So get at least 16 marks out of total 40 marks
Failure Points ( must fail !! )* Unstable structure ( U-frame action in truss design not considered ! )* Structure inside / encroachment clearance envelope* Impossible to construct
Section B Get at least 24 out of total 60 marks ^ Design calculations - 25 marks must cover all major elements such as beam, slab, column, foundation, abutments etc. ^ Drawings - 20 marks general arrangement – plans, elevations and sections etc. and structural details level of details - good enough for taking off quantities.
^ Details - 7 marks show your understanding about connection details of structural components/elements. ^ Programmes - 8 marks test the site experience and realization of construction activities.
