Neoplasia Introduction By DR.HALA BADAWI LECTURER OF PATHOLOGY
Neoplasia Characteristics Gross picture BENIGN MALIGNANT • Not capsulated • Areas of necrosis and haemorhage • In solid organs: fixed irregular mass with ill defined borders • In body surfaces: Polypoid (fungating), infiltrating or ulcerative • Spherical or ovoid in shape • Mostly capsulated • No haemorrhage or necrosis
Neoplasia Characteristics Microscopic picture Cytological Features BENIGN MALIGNANT • Cytological atypia (anaplasia) • Change in cellular morphology • Cellular polymorphism, nuclear hyperchromatism, mitoses & tumour giant cells • Change in cellular pattern • (Loss of polarity) Cells like the original cell
Neoplasia • Microscopic Features(ANAPLASIA) • Pleomorphism • Hyperchromatic nuclei • Multiple large nucleoli • High N/C ratio • High mitotic rate • Abnormal mitosis • Tumor giant cells
