Problem Solving Mr. Capella
Problem Solving Steps • Define the problem • Analyze the problem • Research previous designs • Specifications • Constraints & limiting factors • Select best solution • Construct & test • Redesign & retest
Define the Problem • Write down a concise statement which summarizes the problem • Then where you want to be when the problem is solved
Analyze the Problem • Look closely at the problem • Determine possible ways to solve it
Research Previous Designs • What have people done in the past to solve this problem? • What things seemed to work and which ideas failed?
Specifications • What are the requirements to solve the problem? • What must the solution you decide on do? • Some examples are it must drive, fly, float
Constraints • What things might limit my solution? • Also called limiting factors
Limiting Factors • Laws of Nature
Limiting Factors • Rules of the project
Limiting Factors • Time
Limiting Factors • Weight
Limiting Factors • Size
Limiting Factors • Cost and Materials
Select the Best Solution • Brainstorm ideas for your solution • Select the best possible solution from the ideas you have developed
Construct the Solution • Take the information you have gathered • Build a model and finally a working model • A working model is called a prototype
Test the Prototype • This is the first test of your solution • A working model or prototype • Do not be disappointed if your solution fails the first time • Remember this is only a prototype testing stage
Did You Accomplish the Solution? • Do you think that you solved the problem the best way possible or is there room for improvement • More often then not rethinking may need to be done
Redesign With Your Findings • With your test results you might need to change a few things • This is often called tweaking
Retest Your Solution • Retesting may take several tries until it meets the standards for the solution • Tweaking is a continuous process that ends with a final test
Need For the Solution • Does your solution have a need in society and does it help a large number of people?
Global Impacts of Your Solution • This is to ensure that once you have completed your solution it is a benefit to mankind and the environment • Harming things to accomplish a goal is not solving anything
The End • Technology Education Dept. • Onondaga Nation School
