  1. Our Mission is … To provide rehabilitative services in the Windsor/Essex County Community, enriching the lives of children and youth with disabilities and special needs, by “helping their abilities grow” to their fullest potential.

  2. We are part of a larger network of children’s rehabilitation service providers 21 CTCs across Ontario serve 60,000 children in their designated geographical areas.

  3. A growing number of children require JMCC services In 1978 the Centre provided services to 150 children annually Today that number has grown to more than 2,100annually

  4. JMCC provides essential services to children who face life long challenges • Birth Defects (spina bifida, cleft lip and palate) • Neurological conditions (cerebral palsy, brain tumors, head injuries) • Neuromuscular conditions (muscular dystrophy) • Trauma (post surgery, post injury) • Orthopedic/musculoskeletal conditions

  5. JMCC provides essential services to children who face life long challenges • Illness (cancer, arthritis) • Genetic disorders (Down’s Syndrome) • Developmental delays • Metabolic conditions • Cardiovascular and respiratory conditions • Autism

JMCC CLINICIANS Assess, select, prescribe, customize, provide training for a full scope of accessibility products, services & solutions including: • Surfing limited options for funding…client eligibility vs. product eligibility • Assisting with application process • Obtaining vendor quotes • Writing letters of advocacy

MOBILITY AND POSITIONING: custom positioning / seating in specialty wheelchairs, walkers, push toys, car seats, strollers, highchairs, play chairs, classroom chairs, splints / braces / orthotics PLAY / RECREATION: toys, bikes, sport equipment COMPUTER ACCESS: software & hardware ie. head switches, sip / puff, joystick etc.

  11. WHAT cont’d? • Personal care and daily living: • feeding, dressing, bathing, toileting, lifts/transfers, • Communication aides and systems • Academic success • Care giver education and training

  12. HOME AND SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS Accessibility design for dependent care is very different than design for personal independence

HOME ENVIRONMENTS • Structural design consultation for new builds and renovations • Entry accessibility / ramps, platform and stair lifts • ie. widened doorways, lighting, flooring, bathrooms • Ceiling or portable lift systems • Emergency evacuations / preparedness • Environmental access ie. to turn on TV

SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTSSAFETY, ACCESSIBILITY, PARTICIPATION • New designs and remodels / structural accessibility • Client assessment and individual RX • Equipment for mobility, personal care, academic access, EA training, • Busing / transportation ie. E-Z-On vest for children who sit on seats, tie downs for wheelchairs • Play structures, bikes • Equipment for written communication ie. adapted computers, software, switches etc

  15. VEHICLE • Selection, design, funding, after market changes • Ramps or lifts • Side or rear entry • Tie downs • Raised roof, lowered floor • Passenger restraint systems • Interface with garage / driveway etc

  16. RECREATION / PARTICIPATION • Partnered with Parks and Rec. programs, Novolletto, • Waterworld / new aquatic centre • Miracle League Baseball Diamond • Ambassador Golf • Childrens Safety Village • LTTW • Rec groups • Supports for individuals to select and integrate into community programs

  17. TRANSITION TO ADULT LIFE • Accessibility and support at college and university • Medical clinics that are wheelchair access • Personal transportation • Independent living

JMCC NEW BUILD • Designed to showcase various options for assessment, selection, training ie. variety of faucet handles, paper towel and soap dispensers, lift systems, door openings, enhancements for low vision ie. lighting designs, perimeter markings on floors, stairs • Play structure • Stockpile of loan equipment for trial, short term use

  19. LOAN EQUIPMENT / TOY RESOURCE LIBRARYSHORT TERM LOAN / TRIAL FOR FUN: adapted bikes, walker skiis, bike trailers, sand buggies, toys POST SURGICAL: bathroom equipment FOR VACATIONS ie. on plane MOBILITY AIDES ie. Strollers, Wheelchairs

  20. RESEARCH At any point in time JMCC is involved in at least 4 active research projects in the field of pediatric rehabilitation Current projects related to technology and accessibility…
