Changing Africa • Improving governance • Better, stable macroeconomic policy and practice • Some improvements in microeconomic policy and practice • Growth (but pattern/composition does not deliver enough jobs) • A demographic ‘gift’: youth • Continuing urbanisation • Slow but growing regionalism and growing global integration • But poverty and food insecurity remain CAADP: Sustaining the momentum

What CAADP’s achieved • Is an African owned initiative and agenda • Provides an African platform for advocacy for agriculture • Offers a broad strategic framework for policy development, and opens up policy processes for greater participation • Has defined roles for and built linkages between key institutions, started to strengthen capacity • Has started to strengthen African knowledge communities: four pillar framework papers prepared • Focuses on resource mobilisation and investment planning processes: • 30 countries have National Compacts • 23 have started to finance their investment plans and subjected them to independent Technical Reviews organized by the NEPAD Agency • 20 have held Business Meetings • Provides processes for dialogue and coordination with development partners • Has started to include the private sector and other NSAs • Is about accountability in a sector wide framework CAADP: Sustaining the momentum

Objectives for agriculture • Agricultural growth and productivity increases to provide: food security and resilience; employment and opportunities, especially for women and youth; increased contribution to economic and social transformation, including through increased savings and domestic investment, and improved trade balances. • We need to continue to scale-up public investment and donor support for public investment through investment plans. • We need to continue to encourage domestic and foreign private investors, and public private partnerships.
