The Classic Deck of 52 Playing Cards • 4 Suits: Spades ♠, Hearts ♥, Clubs ♣, Diamonds ♦ • Each suit is made up of 13 cards or ranks. • A (ace), 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J (jack), Q (queen), K (king). • Ace is usually considered high. • J, Q, K are the face cards
POKER • Poker is a card game played with the standard 52 card deck. • There are many variations of Poker. • Games include, 5 card draw poker, 7 card stud poker, Texas Hold’ em.
What are the good hands? • I now rank the hands from most dominant to least with examples. One of our projects will be to compute the odds & probabilities of these hands. • Royal Straight Flush (A♠, K♠, Q♠, J♠, 10♠) • Straight Flush (8♦, 7♦, 6♦, 5♦, 4♦) • Four of a kind (3♦, 3♠, 3♣, 3♥, 8♣) • Full House (Q♦, Q♠, Q♣, 5♣, 5♥) • Flush (K♣, 10♣, 7♣, 3♣, 2♣) • Straight(Q♠, J♣, 10♦, 9♦, 8♣) • Three of a kind (Q♦, Q♠, Q♣, 4♦, 10♦) • Two pairs (K♦, K♠, 8♣, 8♦, A♥) • One pair (7♥, 7♣, A♣, Q♥, 4♥) • No pair (or Pai Gow or garbage) (5♣, J♦, A♣, 3♠, 7♥)
5 card draw • Usually play with 7 • Win with high hand • Deal 5 cards down to each player. Bet. • One at a time, players exchange up to 3 cards in their hands. Bet. • Showdown
7 card stud • Usually seven players • Win with high hand • Deal 2 cards down and 1 card up to each player. Bet. • Deal 1 card up to each player. Bet • Deal 1 card up to each player. Bet • Deal 1 card up to each player. Bet • Deal 1 card down to each player. Bet • SHOWDOWN
Texas Hold’em • Win with high hand • Pre-Flop: Player 1 is the small blind, player 2 is the big blind. (These are bets made with no knowledge of cards.) • Pre-Flop: Each player is dealt 2 down cards. Bet. (Start with player 3) • Flop: 3 cards are dealt up in the center of the table (all players have these cards). Bet. • Turn: One card is dealt up in the center. Bet. • River: One card is dealt up in the center. Bet. • Showdown.
What’s probability got to do with it? • Probability is the study of the likelihood of an event. • People who play cards or table games need to know the probability of an event in order to make informed decisions.
