Troposphere • Layer closest to the Earth. • Where all weather occurs • The higher you go in the Troposphere the colder it gets. • The only layer of the atmosphere where life is possible. • Extends 5-10 miles up from the Earth’s surface.
Stratosphere • Second layer of the atmosphere. • Extends from 10-30 miles above the Earth’s surface. • Temperatures remain fairly constant. • Very calm.....NO WEATHER! • Special form of oxygen-OZONE, which protects us from harmful UV rays. • Planes fly here, birds do not!
Ionosphere • Charged particles, called IONS, are found in this layer. • Radio waves are sent from Earth and reflected back by this layer with satellites. • It is very cold (-171F).
