Pressure like the kind you’re under…
Barometer: invented in 1643 by Italian scientist Evangelista Torricelli Made by filling a glass tube full of mercury and putting it upside down in a dish of mercury. How We Measure Pressure
The pressure from atmospheric gases on the Hg in the dish keeps the Hg in the tube. Notice that we measure this pressure by how high the Hg in the tube gets. “Standard” pressure is 760mm Hg. mm Hg
torr • Remember the guy’s name that invented the barometer? • Evangelista Torricelli • In his honor, they renamed mm Hg to “torr” • 1mm Hg = 1 torr, sostandard pressure is 760 torr. 760 mm Hg = 760 torr
atm • “Standard atmosphere” is abbreviated atm • It is equal to the standard atmospheric pressure, which we’re already talking about… • Standard pressure is 1 atm 760 mm Hg = 760 torr = 1 atm
kPa • SI unit of pressure is the kiloPascal • It is abbreviated kPa • Standard pressure is 101.3 kPa 760mm Hg = 760 torr = 1 atm = 101.3kPa
psi (last one, I promise) • A unit used in engineering, and the one you know and love: pounds per square inch. • Abbreviated psi • Standard pressure is 14.7 psi 760mm Hg = 760 torr = 1atm = 101.3kPa = 14.7psi
Conversions! • This looks like a really long conversion factor! 760mm Hg = 760 torr = 1atm = 101.3kPa = 14.7psi • I can set up t-charts with these! Yay!!
See It In Action! If my pressure is 850torr, how many atmospheres is that? atm 1 = 850 850 torr =1.1 atm 760 torr 760
Again, Again! • What would the pressure be in kPa if it is 920mmHg? = 93196 920 mmHg =120kPa kPa 101.3 760 760 mm Hg
You Do It! • If my pressure is 2.4atm, how many psi would that be? psi 14.7 = 35.28 2.4atm =35 psi 1 atm 1
5 To Do Instead of Homework Bring them to me to check when you’re done: • 3.4 atm = ? mmHg • 358kPa = ? atm • 1150torr = ? mmHg • 35psi = ? atm • 560torr = ? kPa
