SYVUHS Graduation Requirements • English 4 years (40 credits) • Math (must include Math 101 or equivalent) 3 years (30 credits) • Science (Physics, Biology, Chemistry) 3 years (30 credits) • Social Studies (WC, US HIST, GOV/ECON) 3 years (30 credits) • Foreign Language/Fine Art/CTE 1 year (10 credits) • PE * 2 years (20 credits) • Electives90 credits Total 250 credits D = Passing grade for graduation. Many classes will have prerequisites requiring higher grades.
A-G REQUIREMENTS FOR UC AND CSU ADMISSIONNOTE: Students must earn a “C” or above to meet requirement
What to Expect at SYVUHS . . . • More homework in academic classes • Graduation based on credits, not promotion • Homework is included in grade • Math & English are harder than anticipated • Increased social activities necessitates need for time management

Grade reports . . . Report Cards All report cards will be available on Aeries Parent Portal. (Report cards will no longer be mailed home) ~ Two quarter grade reports (1st and 3rd quarter) – determines eligibility for athletics ~ Two Semester grades (December and May) – also determines eligibility for athletics *Only semester grades appear on transcript Mid-Quarter Reports ~ 4 ½ weeks into quarter (only for “D” and “F” grades – Aeries Parent Portal) Parent Portal – “CANVAS” ~ Internet access to grade reports Sports Eligibility ~ Must maintain 2.0 Grade Point Average

Required Registration Materials:Online Enrollment ONLINE ENROLLMENT: Must be completed before any classes added for student * NOTE (1): Students must have Proof of Residence and Course Request Sheetwith them when meeting with counselors * NOTE (2): Student will not be enrolled until all the required registration materials and online enrollment are submitted If you are unsure of course placement please ask for teacher recommendation (keep in mind that colleges prefer students continue to challenge themselves and take math their senior year)
New Student Enrollment • Last year we switched to an online enrollment process through our student information system: Aeries • All enrollment information can be found on the Enrollment and Pirate Check-In tab on the new Guidance Office webpage, which is found on the school website www.syvpirates.org
Welcome to Aeries! • Once you click on the Enrollment and Pirate Check-In tab you will be brought to a new page where you will find the link for New-Students as well as a brief overview of the enrollment process. Once you select Click Here you will be re-directed to the Aeries Online Enrollment Page. Step 2 Step 1
The Steps! • When selecting a year for your student be sure you select 2019-2020 Pre-Enrollment. • You will then be prompted to provide an email and password. You will then be sent an email to confirm your account. • Once confirmed you will be prompted to complete a series of questions (Name, DOB, Parent/Guardian, etc.)
NextGen Science (NGSS)Began Fall 2018 • Integrated Science Program • All Freshmen will have Physics • Part of College and Career Readiness • 3 Options for Freshmen • Physics and the Universe (Physics) • Physics and the Universe Honors (Honors Physics) • Agriculture Earth Science (FFA has priority)
English Placement Test (RI) • Reading Inventory (RI)– • ALL incoming 9th graders are required to take this exam • This exam will be administered at each feeder school IN THE SPRING • Lexile scores from RI will be used for placement for College Prep and CP Comprehensive English classes. • College Prep: must score 1050 or above • CP Comprehensive: scores below 1050 • Lexile scores AND 8th grade English grades will be used for placement in Honors English 1. • Lexile score must be 1080 or above AND students must earn “B” average or better in 8th grade English classes • STUDENT MAY RE-TEST ONE TIME ONLY – NO LATER THAN JULY 15 • Contact Melissa Shaw in the Guidance Office: mshaw@syvuhsd.org or x3207.
MATH ASSESSMENT • ALL incoming 9th graders are required to take a math assessment to test the student’s knowledge of fundamental math concepts necessary to be successful in Math 101. • The results of this test will be used to place the student in the appropriate level math class. • Multiple measures will be used in determining student placement. • Students may re-take the assessment once – but no later than July 15. • The vast majority of students will qualify into Math 101. The assessment is designed to reveal which students need a prep course for Math 101. • The prep course, called Math 100, is designed to enhance skills necessary to be successful in Math 101. • The Honors portion of the math sequence begins in Math 201 for students that qualify.
MATHEMATICS PATHWAYS Courses in higher level mathematics: Pre-calculus, AP Calculus, AP Statistics Algebra 2 Math 301 Math 201 Geometry Algebra 1 Math 101 INTEGRATED Naming Pathway(Typical outside U.S.) 3 courses that attend to Algebra, Geometry, and Probability and Statistics each year TRADITIONAL Naming Pathway(Typical in U.S.) 2 Algebra and 1 Geometry course with some Probability and Statistics scattered throughout
PRE-REQUISITE LETTER GRADESNo Waivers allowed • In order to take Honors English: - 8th grade English grades must be: “B” average or better all trimesters of all English classes • In order to take a World Language: - 8th grade English grades must be: “B” average or better all trimesters and enrolled in CP English 1 or Honors English 1 • In order to place in Physics and the Universe Honors: • 8th grade English and Science grades must be:“A” every trimester/semester
REMINDER …… • No elective changes after August 7th • All classes(academic and elective) are year long • Academic level changes within first 6 weeks with parent permission • Teacher change or period change requests will not be granted
Upcoming Events • Open House - March 27, 6:00 – 8:00 PM • RI (Lexile testing for English placement) – • Spring (schedule will be sent to each school) • Last Day to make an elective change - Aug. 7 • Freshman Orientation -August 9 • Will have separate orientation sessions for students and parents. More information will be mailed out in summer • School Begins -August 14
