Analysis of audience research Music Video
What is your favourite music genre? • The large majority of the people I questioned favourite music genre was ‘pop’, which nearly dominated half of the overall figures. This is what I was expecting as ‘pop’ is the most mainstream and popular genre in music. • Hip hop scored very low, with only one person out of 15 liking it. My initial plan was to create a music video which was in this genre of music, but due to the results I had I could change this, as the music choice would most probably not be popular to the audience. Other music genre’s that were chosen were rock, 3 people chose this, which is the second most popular genre. This could also be an option for my music video. These two genres clearly stand out from the rest of the options, so reggae, indie, R’n’B and rap will be out of the equation.
What is your favourite type of music video? • From these statistics I have discovered that Narrative is the most popular type of music video. This I think is because there is a story to the song that the viewer can follow when listening. It will induce the audience a lot more as to a performance video, as shown from my results. Only one person out 15 said their favourite music video was performance, I shall not use this style in my music video. Concept is also a very popular type of video, which I could fuse in with a narrative music video. Cuts between different shots could achieve this, it is a popular technique which is used in ‘I need help’ & ‘Part of me’, two music videos of which I analysed. • Performance is a very unpopular type of video, I think that this could be linked in with hip hop/ rap and not getting many votes. Particularly rap artists will perform, rap and stare into the camera.
What has been your favourite music video and what do you like about it? • This question sparked a variety of different answers, but the most popular and commonly heard answer was ‘Anaconda’ by NikiMinaj. The reason behind it was also a very common answer, simply because of her ‘ass’. From this I have discovered the popularity in female nudity for male and female audiences. Mulvey’s gaze is a theory which would work well in my music video as nudity is popular, but I would not do this as volunteers for this would be limited, it is also a school project. The most popular videos are the ones that are different to the usual, such as ‘OK GO- Needing/Getting’ and ‘Sia-chandelier’. ‘Headlights’ by Eminem was also a popular song choice, because of the story behind the song which is clearly demonstrated in the music video, this backs up my information about narrative being the most popular and interesting to watch.
What is it that hooks you into watching a music video and not just listening to it? • Once again, the main part to a music video to keep people interested is the storyline, aka the narrative. 46% of people agreed that the storyline is what keeps them watching a music video, this is backing up my evidence further that narrative is the best type of music video to keep an audience interested. Second most popular is comedy with 23%.
Have you heard of the X-Ambassadors? • Only 2 people out of the 15 I asked had heard of the X-Ambassadors, so this made it very hard for me to get enough answers for my next question which was ‘Have you heard of the song ‘Jungle’ by X-Ambassadors? If so, what would you associate the lyrics with?’. The two answers that I got for this were sport and religion. This could be because of the identity the song was given on the build up to the 2014 world cup. This song was used in a narrative concept in order to promote the world cup and ‘Beats By Dre’.
What age are you? • The large majority of people who answered my questions were aged 16-18. 14 were of this age and only one other person who was 12. This could have a big impact on the results that I have gathered. Although I feel that my music video will be targeted at this age of audience, so this information that I have gathered will be useful. The one person I asked who was not this age had very similar answers to the rest, this is because I think that teenage interests are very similar, so my video will be suitable and interest all teenagers hopefully.
