Who are Pharmacist? • Pharmacists are health professionals who, in addition to dispensing prescription medication to patients, also provide information about the drugs their doctors have ordered for them. • Pharmacists held about 275,000 jobs in 2010. • Most worked in pharmacies and drug stores. Others were employed by hospitals and by grocery stores and other retail establishments.
What kind of degree do I need? • To become a pharmacist one must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, known as a Pharm.D. • Pharmacy programs are usually four years long and must be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). • To gain admission one must have at least two years of college study with courses including math, chemistry, biology, physics, humanities and social sciences.
Outlook at becoming a Pharmacist • Employment of pharmacists is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2020. • This is partly due to an increase in the number of older people who tend to use more medication. • New drugs will be introduced to the market also causing a need for more pharmacists.
Earnings as a Pharmacist • Pharmacists earned a median annual salary of $113,390 and median hourly wages of $54.51 in 2011.
