What is inquiry? • The National Science Education Standards define inquiry as… • “the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on evidence” (NRC 1996, p. 23)
So… • Think of inquiry as “the ways scientists think about and try to solve problems using logic.” • Logic • Reasoning from data • Apply scientific skills • Real world problems
Inquiry and Process Skills • Observe • Infer • Measure • Predict / Hypothesize • Variables • Experiment
Features of Inquiry • The National Research Council (2000) identified several “essential features” that describe what a learner does in inquiry: • Engages with a scientific question • Participates in design of procedures • Gives priority to evidence • Formulates explanations • Connects explanations to scientific knowledge • Communicates and justifies explanations
What are the students doing? • Asking the questions • Designing the procedures • Deciding what data to collect • Formulating explanations based on the data • Communicating and justifying the results
